The Religious in Eritrea welcome Ethiopian peace offer

Eritrea’s Catholic religious men and women embrace the olive branch of peace from Ethiopia and urge their country’s leaders to accept the offer.

Agenzia Fides – Asmara

“The step taken by the Ethiopian government is positive and fills our hearts with happiness. Now it is up to (Eritrean President) Isayas Afeworki to act. He will decide if he really wants to make peace,” These are some of the comments from the Catholic religious men and women in Eritrea.

Ethiopia is ready to cede disputed territories

In April, this year, Abiy Ahmed became Ethiopian prime minister. Africa’s youngest head of government, 42-year-old Abiy has surprised many inside and outside Ethiopia with his fast-paced radical reform agenda since taking office. He has quickly lifted a state of emergency; vowed to end months of deadly protests and released thousands of political prisoners. On Tuesday, Abiy announced that Ethiopia would implement the Algiers peace agreement that requires it to cede the disputed territories with Eritrea, including the border town of Badme, which it has occupied for more than twenty years.

At the root of it all is a bitter and bloody two-year conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea that led to the loss of thousands of lives on both sides. The tensions and enmity have lingered on and provided the Eritrean government with a convenient excuse for repression of its people citing the importance of readiness for war with Ethiopia.

Eritrea’s religious urge reconciliation

This week, Eritrea’s religious commended Ethiopia’s willingness to cede the disputed territories to Eritrea and put an end to the twenty-year tensions.

“What we ask ourselves is if peace with Ethiopia is really convenient for Isayas Afeworki,” the religious who cannot be named for security reasons told Agenzia Fides.

Eritrea is considered one of the most repressive countries in the world. The Eritrean government exercises absolute power over the country and has banned opposition parties in the country. The state does not have any independent media. The United Nations’ Security Council imposed an arms embargo on Eritrea in 2009 because the government was providing political, financial and logistical support to militant groups in Somalia. Eritrea has always denied the accusation.

Eritreans and Ethiopians are brothers and sisters

The religious in Eritrea say they dream of a country where there is peace.

“Ethiopians and Eritreans are brothers and sisters. They have the same origins. They speak languages which come from the same linguistic family (ge’ez). They have the same religious traditions; the same costumes and even the same cuisine. They are called to reconciliation and to living together,” Agenzia Fides quotes Eritreanreligious men and women.

” Ethiopia would implement the Algiers peace agreement that requires it to cede the disputed territories with Eritrea, including the border town of Badme, ..”

Would be or should be is another question . but let’s pray and hope. No other option for the sake of peace. thus, seam to be understood. However, no sign that could be happen because of ignorance from the part of HGDEF regime and WEYANIYE. Also some profit holders TEGARU, despite they are settlers they are claiming territory don’t belong. There are people who declare BADME or death in one hand and Erob question on the other hand, so that is serious question. governments are not arguing, the concerned people too. What a mess? .in my opinion Eritrea should had declared the border before applying referendum, instead Isayas said ” no border and we were silent. pity. now facing hard question.

    • Danilo June 10, 2018

Addition, if we speak border issue, the only solution is to steak with colonial border as binding.

  • Gezae June 10, 2018

    Make no mistake:
This is the right time to recognize who those come out of closet called themselves as Eritrean oppositions who stands or concerns about Eritrea people and country. Because it is a more important time than ever to know not just who your friends and enemies are, but those confusing social interactions which, for lack of personal information, connection and in-person meeting, are somewhere in between.

On the flip-side, I encapsulate it in a phrase I use now, called “Critical Advocacy,” those who fellow travelers stand for the interests of Woyane TPLF/Woyane- X-Ethiopian regime sellouts outraged & went crazy on the decisions of EPRDF acceptance of the final and binding Algiers agreement. I think one shouldn’t go out of one’s way to piss people off, but when the inevitable shit storms do come, it should be somewhat celebrated. If you’re not pissing people off you’re being too wishy-washy and not saying anything meaningful.

Many reading this may be uncomfortable with the idea. This is an easy one to see, because their behavior is so clear and uniform. They are negative in their words with you, and negative in their emotions for you, if they even express any of these directly. You might hear what they think of you through gossip, or from far away through impersonal emails, or even see anonymous posts about.

No, it isn’t exactly political correctness that dogs history; it’s more a pernicious refusal to enter imaginatively the lives of our leaders. Great and good men and women stirred sugar into their coffee knowing that it had been picked by slaves. The courage of a people is necessarily determined by its material and moral conditions. The man and his surroundings constitute a whole. But Ethiopia had left behind two evil legacies: the harsh lesson that violence works, and second one is recruiting directly and indirectly paid so politician.

Do you know Melles by his mother side is very closer to me than PIA. Since 1988 I had great relation with Aboy Zenawi when first met at Shiraro.. We spend a lot of time together in Adi Hagery, Adi Nebri Ed, Yecila, and Aduwa before independence; When both heard Melles’;s first daughter was born together we were very happy.

After independence I had good relation with Aboy Zenawi and some of the family members. Aboy Zenawi had great respect for PIA and people of Eritrea. But do you know when the motive against Eritrean happened I was the first person detained at MAEKELAWI in Addis Abeba and deported to Moyale Kenya because of the color of my eye and other nonsense reasons. So here your mental analysis null and void.

‘The market chaos suites the thief’… as the saying goes, the tyrant and his cronies love the confusion, turmoil and lawlessness,it suites them perfectly,it is their camouflage to continue robbing the poor people in broad daylight. They are allergic to peace and rule of law, that is why when this remarkable offer was extended to them by the brilliant EPM they recoiled and broke into welts and started scratching from head to toe,epi-pen anyone?! before the anaphylactic reaction ensues.Could this be the reason they are mum? it is time to check with adi halo.

    Hi all

Great news from Ethiopia and any sane person should be pleased with joy in Eritrea except the regime and his dogs in and out side Eritrea. Any government has the intrest of his country at hart respond to any call from foreign nation let alon to the big issue like that of Ethio-Eri related matter. But Eseyas and his government know exactly could not live in peace because peace led to other important thing rule of law. The only excuse to terrorised the people is that to create imaginary or perceived enemy leave everything else to be delt later. Chaos is perfect environment for the regime in Eritrea. What is amusing is that the so called opposition to come out from left and right to respond and to add precondition to the call from the good dr government of Ethiopia. In a normal county opposition put pressure to the governing body what’s its response to big issue afecting the country years to come . Then if they’re happy with the response they’ll support it. Otherways to come out to punch over thier weight is no only foolish but shows how incompetent they’re.
The pfdj dogs in diaspora aside who always await an instructions from Asmara what to do or what to say, why is the tyranny muttered? The simple answer is that he don’t have answer , he can’t accept peace who knows with peace his very safty would be in question. What he will do is demand some thing like withdraw your solders 25 or even 70 km from boarder etc to frustrated the other part. Then his dog’s and some innocent citizens will say there are not genuine for peace and the tyrant will stay in power. If someone said I accepted your demand and implemented it the your anser would be thank you and ask how to proceed. Oh in Eritrea normal is scared. Every thing defying normality. The only thing we can do know is to pray to the almighty to give us marcy.
