A false rumour that men in Eritrea would be legally obliged to marry at least two women went viral this week. But it’s a hoax that has hit at least four countries to date, and actually began in Iraq, where it wasn’t as implausible as it seems.

When a far fetched story about enforced polygamy in Eritrea began circulating, it captured attention across the continent. But in fact similar stories – all of them false – have cropped up in a number of countries since the beginning of the year.

And in each case, the way hoaxers spread the rumour on social media pretty much identical. Here’s how it plays out.

An “official” government document is leaked on social media, bearing a letterhead, or the signature of a supposed dignitary.

I am afraid the story might be a rumor , but the reality in Eritrea might not be far from truth. Young People are leaving the country and are not heading to the same destination equally resulting in such type of issues.

Could it be “CIA & WEYANE” that spread this rumour ? eh

      Time BOMB
      Could it be you?

Some haters with wicked agenda against Eritrea will always say or
write bad things to blackmail our nation . But to print their
polygamy hoax in this forum only serve their desire to get attention .
Some people enjoy to spread suspicious rumors for the sake of their
    arrogance satisfaction .

It could be a retaliation for the rental of our ports. who is/are mad as hell about our ports?

    • Amare Berhe Mesfun February 2, 2016

What use is madman Eseyas Af Adgi making from the ports? Exporting what? only hatred. of course our ports are for re-exporting guns got from Iran to the Huthi of Yemen, madman can’t swollow the bitter lose of Hannish, what else? don’t say salt. Back in mid 1990s (1996 to late 1999) ERIFISH a private company owned by Taha Siraj(Eritrean),Mr.Klaas Post(Holland) and Mr.Franco Lucintini(Italy)was exporting four 40ft countainers of frozen fish a month to the EUwith a value of about 3.5 dollare a month which comes directely to the CBE.Where is ERIFISH now? The madman + his mad colleague Petros S. the then Minister of fisheries destroyed. The day will come and will get rid and trash these garbage drunkards to the dustbin of history.

I think the rumor is just a rumor. There is no way Eritrean society would abide by such primitive practice given the experience of the armed struggle for independence.

  • Asmara Eritrea January 31, 2016

Incredible! Yemane Gebremeskel at last admits there is a madman in Asmara, which, of course, we all knew for a very long time. This will undoubtedly land Yemane a beating from the bully himself for calling him a madman. Time to flee the country whilst you are still alive.

    Eritrea forever, death to dictaorship.

I nver laughed as hard as when I saw Zuma and the overcrowded bus heading to Eritrea, on Twitter. It was sad and funny.

Me too. I couldn’t stop laughing. Even now I can’t stop laughing thinking about it.

  • Amare Berhe Mesfun February 1, 2016

It is sad but not surprising after all a madman loose in Asmara. This good for nothing so called regime is driving mad all Eritreans. Now it is a false rumour but soon it will will be true since hundreds of youth specially male (almost 95% with very few female among them) are daily fleeing from our God forgotten country to Sudan,Ethiopia and further away of course this forced migration will soon have negative impact in the demography of our country. Cry the beloved country

Dear Assena, why didnt you post my comment about the practised polygamy by our own so called officials? Its a fact not a rumor. The high official I mentioned (Nebil Said Idris) took his oldest son already to Amerika last year. If his Eritrean wife asks for divorce she will never see her son again. This is a important issue about the right of our Eritrean women. Thanks
