The Perils of Political Theatrics – Assenna.com Editorial

Why is gloom and doom looming large on the horizon in Eritrea?  Why have Eritreans reduced themselves to live a meaningless existence under Isaias Afwerki after having fought epic battles that defined their country’s sovereignty?

Why is gloom and doom looming large on the horizon in Eritrea?  Why have Eritreans reduced themselves to live a meaningless existence under Isaias Afwerki after having fought epic battles that defined their country’s sovereignty? Why have Eritreans allowed Isaias to walk all over them? The misery, isolation, stifling political atmosphere, despondency have so numbed the citizens they are simply sleepwalking through hell at the moment.  One can plainly watch the people shuffle away to mind their personal miseries as the president berates his imaginary enemies and blames others for the misfortunes the country sustained for 25 years under his autocratic rule. That is indeed a mystery! The young people of Eritrea will certainly solve that mystery in due course.

The country lost numerous opportunities to pick itself up and salvage odds and ends at various incidents since independence, including the inexplicable Badme war of1998.  Instead, the government led the country into humiliating experiences such as isolationism that ushered in economic decline, rise of poverty and hardship in rural and urban areas, upsurge in its young people taking flight, suppression of religious and social institutions and more. The country has turned into a land of purges and unjust confinement. Moreover, it has turned into a land that is paralysed with fear and paranoia.  Literally, the last 25 years have gone down the drain.  All that because of one man!  And yet, the president continues to mislead the public, rather in jest, that he has managed to keep the country together in face of persistent adversities.

Without doubt, the public realises now Isaias’ disingenuous speeches and engineered interviews are all theatrics – year in, year out.   They have learned to disregard all those spurious acts. Besides, they are too preoccupied in dealing with their miserable existence.  They ignore him when he launches into long-winded monologues regarding the state Eritrea is in.  The knowledgeable are aware of the fact that he utilises those periodic monologues to impress the exhausted people of Eritrea with falsehoods and hollow arguments. However, he cannot tell that nonsense to a mother who lost her first child during the armed struggle, lost her second during the Badme war, and then lost her third who was trafficked out of the country.

It is bizarre that the president’s views and actions are very much influenced by what goes on in Ethiopia. As far as he is concerned, Ethiopia is the reason why Eritrea is left behind.  In other words, his paranoia is so acute the country is literally being led by the politics of envy.  It is sad to bear witness that Eritrea, due to its self-inflicted paranoia, cannot compete with Ethiopia on the international, continental and regional stages at this very moment.  And yet, the president is too busy keeping an eye on Ethiopia while Eritrea is being pulled to pieces. So much so the young have chosen to flee the country and live a life of a refugee in Ethiopia, the country of his obsession. That is how much damage Isaias has caused to the country; not only physically but also psychologically.

What is being argued here is that the president has brought shame to the country and it begs the question, ‘where are yesterday’s heroes?’  We can concatenate the question with more open-ended questions.  Why are they allowing the country to bleed to death?  Why have they allowed themselves to die a slow death as they witness utter hardship unfolding under their very noses?  Why are they deflecting the full force of the government’s blows by adroitly moving from side to side as the public bears the major brunt of the president’s cruelty?  Once they were the protagonists who led heroic feats that pushed the enemy out of the country.  Where are they now?  They know the human sacrifices they paid to free Eritrea were so much one could easily get lost in one’s own history.  We make no attempt to unknot those question in this brief editorial.

Eritrea is portrayed as a country ruled by a president who has surrounded himself by aging loyalists who do not dare to express their own opinions, a country awash with former combatants who are lost in yesterday’s glories, the general public bullied into submission, and its youth who are kept in check by endless national service chores.  Endless passages can be written on the ideological conformity that is imposed on the public, the human rights abuses perpetrated via falsehoods – the president’s amplification of imaginary adversaries, and the gestapo-tactics prevalent in public consciousness.  It is only a question of time that the president’s political theatrics will culminate in a critical mass that will eventually alter the political landscape of the country for good.

Eritreans, especially the youth, are not docile slaves or simple deserters as they are often portrayed by many analysts.  What we are witnessing now is that the youth, tired of the president’s theatrics, are taking major risks to leave their beloved country in masses on a daily basis. The UN estimates 5,000 youngsters flee Eritrea every month. If this is not open dissension then what is?  Yes, for now that is their response to the president’s unrestrained escapades and recurrent deceptions that have kept them in perpetual servitude. The next stage will be different; nothing will stop them from taking matters into their own hands.

What a shame the author to say eritrea envie ethiopia or a paranoia about ethiopia show how bias is or he is maybe from the other side person.
Indeed isn’t ethiopia after EEBC agreement who refuse to aknowledge the result of the court, isn’t ethiopia that impose the no war no peace situation so eritrea can stand on footwar isn’t ethiopia by a dubious way instigate economic sanction for 2000 eritrean army fighting in the side of al shabab
Later found false but the sanction still there, isn’t ethiopia and djibouti provoking another border skirmish that impose with their friends US imposed arm embargo and many, many many other dealing with US
    So read wikileaks anyway.
Eritrea have the write to stand on high alert and defend it sovereignty and do whatever it takes to destroy the criminal tplf regime ones the finance, train, and help to get adis-abeba even stay there until tplf strengthen how does he say thank you to eritrea, I think everybody knows

      To Eri.,
People like you is the reason why Eritrea is reduced to Degradation. Unless you are absolute damn there is no miracle that will revive the Asmara we know. as we are speaking, Ethiopia is receding further and further away from Eritrea. Djibouti has replaced Asmara for eternity. Even if Eritrea rejoins back, it will finds itself in a strange world. When Ethiopia builds the Mekelle-Tajura port to serve North Ethiopia you have no clue as its strategic implications. From my understanding Eritrea is now redundant, its future standing totally weakened. Eritrea is Sandwiched between red sea and Ethiopia. Asmara’s past success has some thing to do with being part of Ethiopia. That is no more. Ethiopia has replaced Djibouti for Eritrea and it is a very strategic move. Even under friendly government from both boarders Eritrea will play a very marginal roll on the future Ethiopian economy. We have to settle for that, because the past is the past. lets grasp the reality on the ground, move on and live with it!, and never wast our time with an intangible hope. If we have to blame, we need to blame ourselves for the absolute blunder and for putting Eritrea and its people in quagmire!!!

And the new or second Weyane/TPLF generation has completely forgotten you like you never existed and is too busy building a modern and advanced nation.

“Once they were the protagonists who led heroic feats that pushed the enemy out of the country. Where are they now? They know the human sacrifices they paid to free Eritrea were so much one could easily get lost in one’s own history.”

    Assenna.com Editorial

The EPLF ex-Tegadelti who liberated our beloved Eritrea, for reasons not so easy to explain here, became victims of their own success. The culture they had created in Sahel was partly responsible. They came to Asmara saying “We were alone” and “The whole world was conspiring against us”. They were suspicious of anyone and every one who dared to express a different opinion that even slightly diverged from the official line of the Front.
Then they started saying, there was only EPLF and no one else, to the extent that, they even forgot the Eritrean people was/is the owner of the Revolution. Such distorted views were followed by segregation policies, such as Tegadelti/Civil, Tegadali/Warsai, Abal Ghinbar/Teref Meref Amma ..etc. It’s a well known fact that, big ego leads to big troubles. All those who thought the EPLF was their Front and Iseyas their leader, and didn’t want to hear the cries of the victims of the day, didn’t know much about the real EPLF. They didn’t known they too one day would be on the receiving end. The honeymoon did not last long. Iseyas was the most cruel person on planet. His comrades, having worked for him for more than 40 years, were not going to change their nature for whatever reason. They had too much blood on their hands. Now they are the Government. The ‘Gozomos’ used in Sahel may have been replaced with a better modern day machetes, but it’s masters are now the real power of Iseyas regime. They are busy dismantling the country piece by piece before they are all gone. In the last 25 years Eritrea has lost an entire generation that supposedly, was going to be the beneficiary of the sacrifices made in the last 50 years. And yet there are still people who think, we have a Government, while many now have started to think we may not have a country soon, if we continue along this road.
Who is to blame ? Didn’t we love Iseyas, we clapped hands for him, we kept him in our hearts and minds, while he continued to kill innocent people. So let’s enjoy his sadistic tortures, as need not be reminded, the gluttony of the devil knows no limits.

  • Teclay February 8, 2017

The editorial asks ; why ? why ? and why ? = the answer is short and easy ; because it was unnecessary Ghedli ( as Dessale Bereket said – “ገድሊ ሽኩሽኳ”) …..and worse it was not a revolution at all but Isaias’s private enterprise. Prove ( Yemane T/G’s interview )…..

      Ato Teclay
You always say and put it beautifully and elegantly. Indeed, Yemane tesfaghergis exposed all the lies, crimes, double standard and cruel operations of the so-called tegadelti of Ghedli.
Thanks again for your precise educational, level headed observation and great input.

      • AHMED SALEH !!! February 8, 2017

Stop , stop the bad habit of lies after lies .
For the record Yemane Tesfagherghis testimony about Issayas and his Seleya cruelty was informative , But he expressed his firm stand in solidarity with Eritrean struggle and his disappointments to observe martyrdom of innocents and corruption of hypocrites to takes place parallel along side contrary to revolution
principles . Now the Born liars try to twist things in front our presence . .

  • Z.Hagos February 8, 2017

Everything in Eritrea is about Isaias. The ministries, the government offices, the establishments and government service outlets are wolves in sheep’s clothing designed to inflict pains and hardships on the innocent Eritreans. Every year nothing changes in Eritrea. In case of any change, it is for the worse.
    ..
Every year Isaias has nothing to report of. Because there nothing to be reported, Isaias has to resort to joke telling. His repeated jokes are corny because they are not tasteful jokes. Rather than hearing to his jokes, the people would have liked Isaias to unmask all those masked criminals who are responsible for destroying the lives of the people and ruining the economy of the country. But since Isaias considers the Eritrean people as not capable of understanding the situation they are in, he denies them the right to questioning him. As usual, this year, Isaias also showed and treated the Eritrean people with contempt and hatred. What is unusual this year is that Isaias started to despise the whole world by humiliating the leaders of the advanced world. For Isaias to blame those leaders for his failure is scapegoating but to belittle and humiliate them is just insanity and lunacy.

  • AHMED SALEH !!! February 8, 2017

End result for protecting EPLF chickens to roost after independence at the expense of our
unsung heroes reached Asmara . Rules set that they should obey , expectation of tegadelti
to adjust on civilian life get slimmer then finally contributions made is good for only the few .
Unreserved loyalty prevented his/her mind exercise to examine the relation to the ever
changing of general public life . I can not tell if it was politically designed formula to divide
and conquer tactics similar with BADME WAR shameful acts on playing stupid game of
warsay-yikealo verses veterans . Unnecessary sufferings of innocents possibly could be
avoided if people desire awaken to the true nature of truth and reality . Currently Sawa
products dominate HGDF Seleyaand Eri, def. Army and the language remained the same
that keeps seducing all of us into same troubling questions systematically held captives of
bewildered minds . I have close family members with army reserve Sawa recruits and their
main concern is to go back for normal civilian life and smell the aroma of freedom every
    morning .

Ayte Ahmed with your little headless chicken friend Eri, (Eri, just for now I am not going to descend to your gutter bullshit politics so don’t push it any further).
Ayte Ahmed allow me to respond to you briefly and precisely to some of the valid points or issues raised.
Let me first start my comment with an old Tigrigna saying: “ab adi E’wurat’s baAl hade A’inu yineges”, you must also amazingly think you are the wise knowledgeable person of all the past. You may impress or lecture your Eri and PH toyboys but don’t even dare to try it with others!!
Well, DON’T flatter yourself by considering to be an expert or teacher, all your KOLO TITIKO writings don’t mean a thing. Twisting facts is NOT going to serve your sick purposes, it is just going to cover your ignorance and blindness a lot longer. The sooner the better you learn to swallow your beatings & humiliations by the brave TPLFs as you can’t live in denying avoiding it for ever, can you?
Where the hell did you read or get in my comment of “mobilizing Ethiopians to fight against Eritrea”???????????
You must be a sick warmongering individual, what would be your benefit for stirring up new fights of brothers?
To your other childish question of “were there hired mercenaries”, well, the short answer is I was not there but were you yourself a “mercenary” in the civil war of two brotherly people? Can you also tell the truth????
My simple message was and is unlike you sick warmongering people the Ethiopians are developing and living in the “real” world of today and not in your bloodshed, destructive, poverty stricken old sick world.

    • Meakele February 9, 2017

      Mr Sahle,
Instead of arguing with the cannolis and little ghetto brats, we should all put our efforts to getting help to our needy people every where that really counts.
Chauvinism and superiority complex become the worst brain pollutants and are hard to get rid off. Eritrean politics full of ‘skunis’ nature of I know everything, I’ve been everywhere, seen it all thing of bluffs. Simply too many useless parrots around parroting nonsense.
In short, you are talking to stagnant people ‘tsemamat hade derfom’ and don’t take them too seriously. Some have learned to just ignore them and by now I am sure you realize that unless you are willing to join them in their irrational obsession with their imaginary heroism.

      • Z.Hagos February 9, 2017

        Meakele,
at least if the tsemam’s (deaf’s) song and the only song that he knows and sings was beautiful, he would attract listeners. What about the Isaiasists’ noisy song that horribly repels people. And as noisy as the Isaiasists are and their only song is as horrible as their policies, we should deafen our ears, ignore their presence and do what we have to do in order to save our people from their crimes. The declared fight is from outside to inside Eritrea. The pro-tyrant Eritrean Diaspora must be exposed and be brought to trial, while pushing the UN to continue chasing the tyrant and his generals for the crimes they committed.

        • Mike February 9, 2017

          Mr Z.Hagos
Neither is your opposition’s song attractive or beautiful at all!!
At least Eritrean people are quite familiar with Higdefs songs but unfortunately the same thing can’t be said about the useless opposition.
The Eritrean people don’t trust or respect the oppositions whatever songs
or dances they perform. When did the UN ever chased the tyrant and his
generals?? You are far worse than the tsemam hade derfu seb.

Conversing with my Eritreans fellows at Asmara internet Cafe

Lets compare Ethiopia and Eritrea from 1991 Georgian Calendar onward:-
    1) In 1991 Eritrea have had more than enough willing diaspora professional manpower that could have been used to develop it and politically more stable, while Ethiopia was unstable with divergent political views including those that rejected Eritrea’s Cessation.
    2) Weyane has inherited 50-millions of poor Ethiopians, while Shaebya has inherited 3-millions of poor people, and by 2016 Weyane has raised 30-Million Ethiopians to above poverty line while Shaebya has condemn the 3-Million Eritrean to below Poverty line.
    3) Shaebya has closed the only one University Eritrea had “Asmara University” to damp a perceived intellectual challenges, but Weyane has Opened 42-new university all over Ethiopia. Similarly thousands and thousands of vocational Schools, High schools and elementary schools had been built all over Ethiopia, but the only one in Eritrea is Sawa high school.
    4) Shaebya did little on infrastructure development in Eritrea but Weyane has build over 70000km roads.
5)Weyane have built the Addis Ababa City light Electrical rail track that cuts the City North-south and East West, and 786KM Ethio_Djibouti High speed Electrical train track but Shaebya did zero in this regard.
6)Weyane is building the Mekelle_Woldya_Tajura port with 30% complete already Wedi Medhin Berad is in “Adi-Hallo” dosing infront of his blue Whisky.
7)Weyane has about 10-Hydro powers and two Wind powers that will soon total about 12000 MW Shaebya did not even build 100MW and is keeping his nation in the dark.
    8) Weyane has built Addis to compete with Paris, and provincial Cities catching up, but Shaebya has let Asmara to cramble in ruins and withdraws himself to Adi Hallo to avoid fungal, viral and Bacterial contamination of a dying City
    7) Weyane Re-Calibers Ethiopian air lines through a purchase of the latest Boeing and Airbus passenger planes making it the best in Africa and competing with Europeans, Shaebya trying nothing but has only one plane for Wedi Medhin Berad and one plane for the Eritrean people for travel root Asmara Asab root only. To fly by plane from Asmara to any other part is a jock because too small a country can not be more than 10-minuets flight. Take for instance Asmara-Mitsewa, Asmara-Tesene , Asmara-Senafe. So Eritrea has no demostic potenitial except Asmara-Asab .
    8) Weyane scores 195 vote to Join UNSC, Wedi Medhin secludes himself from world community and lives a solitary life, like the Cat Family and snobs African leaders as “batch of garbage” and Western leaders as “Insane” and calls Colonel Fitsum about terror results across Mereb?
9)Weyane manages very well his 100-million population, Wedi-Medhin Berad evicts the Eritrean youth by his ruthless act and are in every corner of the glob like the 7 Lost tribes of Israel.
    10) Weyane has now embarked on the LAMPSSET multi faceted project and Wedi Medhin has “0” plans on the way forward except blaming Weyane
Eritrea how will you remember Wedi Medhin Berad???

The tyrant is a spore forming super-bug who encapsulated himself with an outer shell-the people, making him hard to kill. Nobody has yet to come up with a weapon to penetrate and disintegrate the nucleus of this lethal offender and the youth are having hard time recognizing this familiar bug as their formidable enemy. The sero conversion of this disease was done long time ago in the field, today we have a full fledged infected nation.A recent long time visitor to Asmara wrapped up her observation in these few words,’ITI HIZBI HIMUM YIMESL’
