Mahmoud Ibrahim Muhammad Saeed (Chekini was born in Keren in 1940 from the Habab tribe of Betasghade family and his great grandfather is kentebay Gergis. Chekini completed his elementary and junior education in Keren,   thereafter he moved to Asmara to purse his secondary education at Jalia Arabic secondary school. During his student time he was a good footballer in Keren as well as in Asmara.

In the 1950s the youth’s resistance against the violations of the Federal Constitution intensified when Amharic   became the official language in violation of the Eritrea Constitution which had declared Tigrinya and Arabic as the medium for primary education up to grade four, along with English.

During those years secondary school students  were also influenced by Ato  Woldeab Woldemariam radio programme which was  broadcasts from Cairo.   The radio programme played a great role in the revival of Eritrean nationalism in the 1950s.

Consequently sporadic student strikes became common, especially in Asmara in the 1950s.  In 1957 the generation of Chekini actively participated in organizing demonstrations, in protesting the imposition of Amharic in Eritrean schools as the language of instruction, replacing Tigrigna and Arabic.

Subject: “The mysterious death of Mahmoud Ibrahim Muhammad Saeed (Chekini) 1940-1972, Researched and compiled by Resoum Kidane, February 16, 2018”

Amazing! Captivating with deep sadness! I can’t help — reading every word in slow motion – modifying the TITLE of the Article in mind and finally enunciating it in eight words::“THE MYSTERIOUS SLOW DEATH OF ERITREA INTO OBLIVION”

Eritrea is a classic case of TRAGEDY in HUMANITIES. We cannot help it. We tried it with thirty year (30) year-war; we tried it with eighty to one hundred (80 – 100) civic and opposition parties to bring Eritrea to sanity. It didn’t work. We accuse and insult each other on the Internet – only a reflection of ‘AKlee Tsibet’ in the Tigrigna language. It didn’t work;. And and, of course, it will never work. Why? Go back to our one hundred and twenty years (120) of history. What does it tell you? Search your ‘soul’,. WE CAN’T HELP IT, MY DEAR, HARD WORKING, HONEST, LOYAL, GALLANT FELLOW ERITREANS.. .
    THE END

Rezen,if the the wild crows can talk,if the eerie ravines can whisper,if the vast arid planes can testify,if the dry river beds and acacia trees can open their mouth and speak, this land which swallowed pure souls like comrade Mengsteab Tecle is condemned not bear an edible fruit and continues to be a quick sand where its owners disappear everyday to oblivion.Glory to those who gave it all without reservation. Eritrea is the worst enemy of her children, she eats them and washes them down with AREQI.

Selam k.tewolde I read your superb 85-Word commentary over and over….. Yes, the old adage is still true: ‘it is not the sheer mass of words [instrument of charlatans] that matters but the content therein’.

I sincerely hope that you are keeping all your gem of notes in your precious Note File for your course of action thereupon in due course, as you see fit.
Keep in mind the untarnished future generation of Eritreans would, no doubt, be intensely curious to read the complete TRUE history of their ancestors. That is natural. As such, it is the least that this generation should do for the benefit of future generation. And no one can narrate the story of Eritrea better than You and multiple thousands Like You who offered their Life for what they thought to be a NOBLE CAUSE – regardless of the insidious treachery of others for their own selfish and devilish motives.
I may sound emotional – AND I AM, without embarrassment – but the TRUE History, thick and thin, of the GALLANT PEOPLE of Eritrea MUST BE TOLD – loud and clear. That should be the Final Act of the world famous ERITREAN FIGHTERS for LIBERATION and let history judge them fairly. Thank You
        THE END

I am deeply touched rezen, yes I am the son of that land and the biggest part of me is still roaming in the mosquito infested wetlands of Um hajer, the hills of Duta, the majestic escarpments of the highlands, and the scorching inferno of the Denakil depressions looking for those I left behind in shallow graves. Even though the body departed a long time ago the soul sill hovers over those who mean a lot to us. Good night brother.

Thank you Reesom Kidane and the heroic Chekini family. Ghedli and in this case – tegadalay Chekini – the Qiada al Amma and the Jebha ELF had killed and eaten many of its own children but the ex Jebhas and its left overs who committed these crimes will not dare say a word on many crimes they had committed savagely on many bright college graduates such as Chekini, Kidane Kiflu, the Ubelites, Faluls, peasant Gebar and many thousands but the ex Jebhas will not stop to talk about Shaebia until they vomit every word.
Jebha and its minions will always live in “selective outrage” as one brilliant Eritrean coined it years ago, while white washing Jebha’s and Qiada al Amma’s dirty and bloody tenkobet.

May the great Chekini rest in peace.

Resoum Kidane, i think I forgot to say thank you brother!

    • Simon G February 17, 2018

      Brother Meretse,
I know Amanuel OQbay very well. He was very nice and hero. He was a lot of clandestine work with Haddish Woldegergish before he get out to field. I saw him once with another great fighter, Tclay (or Tesfay) Adi Khanta.
      God bless their souls.

  • meretse February 18, 2018

God bless their souls! You have said right brother Simon G. By the way you also are about Tesfay Adi Kanta. Both– Amanuel Oqubay and Tesfay Adi Kanta along 24 others were martyred on the same day.

  • Nahon February 19, 2018

In the case of Chekini, Rusom’s research and the martyr’s daughter pointed out that the perpetrator of the henious crime was living in Sweden. But for obvious reasons did not mention his name. Although an important clue was given. They were friends.
    Who is this guy ?
Is he the veteran fighter “Ha**ti” ?
The many ex-tegadelti” who abused their position in the name of “ghedli” and committed crimes against their own people will face justice in free Eritrea.

I would so much like to thank Resoum Kidane of http://www.ehrea.org for his contribution and posting the biography of Chekini .
I would like to thank Assen’s.com,asmarino.com and jeberti.com.
Mahmoud sacrifice his life for his people and country but the sad thing is that he was betrayed and assassinated by the criminals who want also to hide and bury his history . I would like to thank also http://www.alwafaa-er.com for being inconsiderate and discriminating against the most honest and courage person who was against the civil war .
I have been hurt when I see all the martyrs biography and my father is singled out why???
I appreciate and thank all who commented.
