    just brilliant . . .

  • Ethiopiawi May 27, 2015

hell no! just be there. eritrea brought so much misery. Except all the wars, destruction etc Eritrea and Eritreans never contributed anything.
Just look at Ethiopia before the unnecessary federation, during the federation and after you left.

It might be good to get more ‘clicks’ but I tell you it will never happen again.

Ethiopia and Ethiopians used our ports for 100s years.

  • Adulis May 27, 2015

It was not more than a kind of relationship between a parasite and a host.

    • Genet-orginal May 28, 2015

Ethiopia and Ethopians used our ports for 100s years.

This is a well thought article, I enjoyed reading it. It is time to take all the emotions out and see things realistically and strategically. Eritrea really needs a visionary leadership which takes bold actions. People we are left behind because of stubbornness and lack of clear thinking.

NO, Zafu we were distroyed from inside out by the like of The dictator. We had visionery leaders who can govern the rest of Africa, but was elliminated, just to see this day; TO UNITE ERITREA WITH ETHIOPIA. WHAT A SINCKY WAY FOR HGDF LEADERS. WHAT A DISGUSTING ACT. INTEGRATION WILL NEVER HAPEN BY BRINGING DOWN THE KIND AND PEACE LOVENG ERITREAN PEOPLE.

I find the article to be an in-depth analysis of the political and economic dynamics that took place between the two countries prior to 1998.

In my opinion, the currency changes in both countries were not well planned and coordinated. It seems that there were a lot of major strategic issues both sides wished to run away from. I would say it would also be worth stressing one of the root causes that their macro-economic policies were divergent. One followed an export-oriented approach while the other favored import-substitution. Nevertheless, it could be possible that petty issues such as the refinery, the new Eritrean currency and the ensuing trade dispute have escalated tensions before the border dispute finally unleashed the brewing hostilities into bloodshed.

The author has superbly unearthed the dynamics in the relation of both countries that finally led them to end up in the bloody conflict situation. But I am rather perplexed and doubtful of a particular source cited in the article:-
How accurate is what the African Confidential claimed regarding Eritrea not contributing tax revenues to the central government in Ethiopia after 1962? The-then small but thriving manufacturing and agro-industries in Eritrea not only generated substantial revenues but they used to export products to Europe and the Middle East. Export revenues in Eritrea were growing steadily until 1974. What about the incomes generated by Assab and Massawa ports? These facts could contrarily imply that Eritrea must have fiscally been a net-surplus province.

In my view, these questions are critical and their elaboration could lead to interesting discussions. I have expressed my comment in the spirit of constructive criticism. It is my hope that the author will find the questions prompting for further discussion.

Ethiopia is not developing for you. It is developing for one sided-investors. Future Ethiopian generations will pay for it. just FYI.

  • eritrean sources May 28, 2015

PIA has secretly ordered ethiopian oppositions in eritrea to be surrendered .this is a system for him to try negotiate with ethiopia through sudan.yemane monkey has been assigned for this secretive operation.sources indicated that even ethiopian opposition leaders found in USA and EUROPE are to be called dramatically for discussions and to be arrested.

Political an economic integration at this juncture of time is impossible to imagine. Though the idea is worth contemplating, it needs generations to make it happen. It has to begin from scratch. The past wounds have to be healed first and then contemplate about economic and political integration between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

  • the noble teacher May 28, 2015

It is excellent analysis ,I am just worried with Eritreans having a close relationship with Ethiopia would not be in the interest of Ethiopians in general and Tigrawot in particular ,I think Ethiopia should get as far as possible from Eritrea as it can ..and with both peoples trading the Tigray Kilil economy could improve ,but ,at what cost..it is a higher price to pay ,I think things should continue the way they are, it may be the best bad idea among bad ideas where there is no a better option.

    • Genet-orginal May 28, 2015

“Tigray Kilil” what is that? is this the preview of the “tigray nation”. I agree with the idea of Ethiopia has to stay as far as possible from Eritrea, as long as they take the Tigrawot with them.
