Italian authorities have rescued five Eritreans adrift near a southern Italian island.

It is the latest immigration tragedy in the waters between Africa and the remote southern Italian island of Lampedusa. The Italian authorities received a call from the Maltese that there were immigrants attempting to reach shore on a rubber dinghy.

It is the latest immigration tragedy in the waters between Africa and the remote southern Italian island of Lampedusa. The Italian authorities received a call from the Maltese that there were immigrants attempting to reach shore on a rubber dinghy.

The first thing you notice is the smell. Sour and rancid, it cuts at the back of your throat; a powerful combination of rotting food, urine and sweat. Next it’s the flies, lots of them, circling in a frenzy. Then, out of the gloom, a pair of eyes emerges, and another – and then the shape of a young man, sleeping deeply on one of the grubby mattresses that line the floor of this derelict place. A few minutes from the centre of Calais, this is “Africa house”, so called because of the 40 or 50 Eritrean asylum seekers who now squat here, waiting and hoping.

ErenaRadio Erena (“Our Eritrea”), a Tigrinya-language station broadcasting by satellite to Eritrea, began operating today in Paris, five days ahead of World Refugee Day. The result of an initiative by Eritrean journalists based abroad and supported by Reporters Without Borders, the station is offering freely-reported, independent news and information to Eritreans in Eritrea.

Over 2170 Eritreans have died of hunger and pastecide-contaminated grains since January, a leaked confidentail letter written by the Ministry of Health to the Presiden’t office reported. The report which does not include those who died before reaching hospitals shows that 226 people in Asmara, 155 in Central , 420 in Sothern , 366 in Anseba, 327 in Northern Red Sea, 326 in Southern Red Sea and 353 in Gash Barka regions have died. Our sources indicated thousands of rural Eritreans are dying unoticed in their homes after emaciated alone. According to report many are weakened to a point where they could not leave their villages in search of food.

been approved for resettlement in the United States of America.
