June 12, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – Sudanese president Omer Al-Bashir begins on Thursday a three-day visit to Asmara where he will hold meetings with the Eritrean president Isaias Afwerki over bilateral relations between the two neighbours.

According to the Sudanese presidency Bashir’s delegation includes his presidency’ affairs minister Bakri Hassan Saleh, foreign affairs minister Ali Karti and the director of intelligence and security services Mohamed Atta.

“The two leaders will discuss the path of bilateral relations and ways to enhance joint cooperation between the two countries”, reported the state news agency SUNA on Wednesday.

This week, Al-Ayam newspaper disclosed that Afwerki had refused to allow SPLM-N rebels to open a new front against Bashir’s regime in eastern Sudan from his western border.

The independent daily reported that Afwerki had been approached last week by the SPLM-N leader Malik Agar and Yasir Arman, secretary general of the rebel group.

The SPLM-N, which formed an alliance with Darfur rebel groups, seeks to capitalise on the growing discontent of Beja ethnic group over the implementation of a peace treaty that Asmara sponsored with the former rebel East Front in October 2006.

Musa Mohamed Ahmed, presidential assistant and head of Eastern Front has reportedly left Khartoum to Asmara to protest the non-implementation of 2006 peace agreement.

Eritrea in the past supported the SPLM and other Sudanese rebel or opposition forces in their struggle against Khartoum government. However, Eritrea has bad relations with Juba which, after the signing of 2005 peace agreement, focused its efforts on the improvement of relations with its regional enemy Ethiopia.

On the other hand, Khartoum since improved its relations with the isolated regime in Asmara, as the two countries signed different political and economic accords. Sudan also banned the activities of Eritrean rebel groups from its territory.

In Khartoum, the opposition Eritrean Islam Islah (Reform) Movement on Wednesday announced that Sudanese security service arrested eight members of its military wing in Kassala, eastern Sudan , near the border with Eritrea.

Khartoum in the recent years was condemned by United Nations and rights groups for handing over Eritrean opponents to Asmara.

On October 17, 2011, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees condemned the Sudanese authorities for handing over 300 Eritreans to Asamara without screening them for refugee status.

Eritrea in the past accused Sudan of supporting Islamic groups who were carrying attacks against the government in the western province of Eritrea near the border.

  • Semere June 14, 2013

I really don’t worry about their summit. Both are toothless who can’t do more harm than what they are doing. I believe high in the agenda is the aftermath of their fall. It is an empty show to attract attention.

you think so I hope so man.that’s get me wares. from the two marcy less.

  • Truly truly i say to you June 14, 2013

Jesus Christ said to his disciples about Pharisees and their leaders( This time for me those Pharisees leaders are Isayas, O. Al´Basher and their supporters are) “Don´t worry about them! They are blind leaders of the blind; and when one blind man leads another, both fall in to a ditch.” (Matthew 15; 14) These two losers are responsible for their nations territorial disintegratey. Look! In O. Al`Bashir era Sudan divided in to two. Isayas embarrassed our nation and people, because caused and late our sovereign territory to be occupied by Ethiopia forcefully, while these both losers concerning how about to stay in power for ever only thinking and against their people and nation interest fighting. But whatever to cover up they committed Genocide attempted, the one is already informed as he will be faced justice in International criminal court tribunal at the Hague soon.
    will continue…

  • Truly truly i say to you June 14, 2013

But surprisingly the world worst criminal dictator who caused genocide for 100, 0000 innocent people to be perished, and millions of Eritrans to be displaced and pershed elsewhere in Sinai and Mediterranean Sea causing Isayas Afeworki, seems temporarily forgotten to be called by tribunal. But i am sure this mockery of justice as it will change and come to its proper sense and very soon will call Isayas to face justice for that he committing genocide, and power abuse he using to oppress people without rule of law.

This visit is coming at a critical time . Guess what ? Egypt is on ” all options are open for Nile Dam ” . This can be translated in to dialogue or war . No worries for the first one ” dialogue ” .

Then let’s look at the war scenario . Egypt doesn’t have the capability to fly that long distance to attack the dam . They will be willing to use Sudan as a base , or send a special force for this operation . Both options require Sudan involvement . So Beshir is in Asmara to consult Iesyase about it .

If Sudan is involved , the Ethiopian force will destroy the Sudan army . No doubt about this . The question is what is the status of Eritrea .

Listen all young Eritreans and the defense force , this is the time to prove yourself that the Mad dog is not going to play with your life any more . This is a good opportunity to prove that he is not in control any more . No Eritrean should die for the sake of Egypt .

We are in marry go round again . If this is not resolved by dialogue , horn of Africa will be in mess again

I do not know about Ethiopian’s but Eritrean’s are in deep miss already. if you do not know yet. we have Ethiopian mercenary(tigrayan) in our own country and our ppl(Eritreans) are all over the place form tigryan camp to sina desert. Eritreans are betrayed by woyana and their have brothers in HGDF.
So, Mr.Nega, if you are concerned about a horn of Africa mess, leave the land you occupied and make a Pease with Eritreans. one thing you should know Eritrean never fought for any body but for themselves.
bottom line ..this Nile/Egypt drama is not Eritrean problem. you know what your message reminds me Eth-Eri conflict and Ethio-TV propaganda…. Eritreans was caught while trying to bomb Ethio university

      • sara June 17, 2013

Isayas is scruples dictator but not such stupid to dig his own grave. If he makes one move in the wrong direction that will be the end of his mafia regime. Not only Ethiopia is watching him but the brave Eritreans are waiting for the right moment to deal with him. Eritreans never take side to harm Ethiopia for short time benefit rather work together for best interest of two sisterly countries. Our relation with Ethiopia is stronger than the relation of any two countries in this world. We have so many things in common ..the same religion, tradition, cloth, food, culture , interest, mentality etc. Name me two countries in this world who can be so related to each other…none. No Egypt, Sudan can be obstacle to our relation. We just need to work together to fight our common enemy HIGDEF MENDEF.

    • sara June 15, 2013

@ simerm2012, are you Ethiopian or Eritrean? you sound dum-a$$ to me. Ethiopians will not going to sleep for Eritrean’s today tomorrow for future. you said we have more common than difference? is this way we kill each other for about 40/ 50 years. think if u have brain. Isyase is tigryan(Ethiopian) and he is killing and destroying Eritrean’s.
also, Ethiopians never abused Egyptians or Sudan’s but Eritrean’s.

      • Kalighe June 15, 2013

Sister Sara you said it all. We have no interest in siding with either side. We should base our foreign policy on complete neutrality. We cannot go to war in support of anyone. We should care less, whether the Egyptian do not get water or the Ethiopians do not get a lion’s share. It’s the business of both countries to sort it out in a way they see it proper.
National interests concern only the countries in question. If our Ethiopian brother/sister want some help, we are ready to offer it, in a away that doesn’t make us part of the problem in a dangerous regional conflict. Besides, if the Ethiopians really think we are brothers/sisters, let them reduce the time it’s taking us to solve our internal problems, by demarcating the border. No one in his/her right mind should think, Eritrea can enter into a regional conflict in support of Ethiopia, without facing the risk of being re-occupied by the same neighbor it’s trying to support against a regional power. When a country is isolated, it’s potential/historical enemy, whose only concerns are strategic interests, will seize the opportunity to inflict on it severe damages, which could be hard to reverse in short term.

        • sara June 17, 2013

@kalighe I agree 100% with what you said. I really don’t like to see Eritrea as Ethiopian supporter.
This is not Eritreans problem and we have to stay out of it.

  • Werkha Hailu June 14, 2013

Our President, Issaias Afewerki is the best leader in the world. Many leaders come to get an advice from him. He has served his country for free for more than 50 years. Because of his leadership we have many universities and many educated people. The standard of living of Eritreans is well above that of most African countries.
