Ethiopia PM visits Tigray region, asked to address conflict with Eritrea

Ethiopian prime minister, Abiy Ahmed has continued his country tour, visiting the capital of the Tigray regional state, where he addressed war veterans and members of the community.

The reformist leader who has visited the restive Oromiya and Somali regions and met with opposition leaders since taking office on April 2, is hoping to quell protests that have rocked the country and mobilise support for democratic reforms.

Welcomed by the Tigray president, Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael, Abiy visited the Martyrs Monument in Mekelle, before addressing a public gathering at the Martyrs Hall in the Tigray capital.

Sources from the gathering said the premier addressed issues raised by the public that included free movement of citizens, infrastructure development and the Ethio-Eritrea conflict.

Ethiopia is currently under a state of emergency that was declared after the former prime minister Hailemariam Desalegn resigned in February.

The ruling EPRDF coalition picked Abiy last month to replace Hailemariam Desalegn, who quit to clear the way for reforms in Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous nation which has been racked by violence for the last three years.

Hundreds have been killed by security forces in Oromiya, the violence triggered by land rights but largely fuelled by a sense of political and economic marginalisation among the young.

After taking the oath of office, the former army lieutenant colonel struck a conciliatory tone and addressed the need for ethnic unity.

Since January Addis Ababa has released thousands of prisoners that included dissidents and journalists in a bid to calm discontent.

Last Friday, it also shut down a detention facility known as “Makelawi”, where rights groups have alleged that torture has taken place. The government plans to turn it into a museum.

The government has often been accused by rights groups of regularly using security concerns as an excuse to stifle dissent and media freedoms.

It’s not easy for an Oromo or Amhara to learn Tigrigna. He must have spent a lot of time in Tigray.
Although the paper he red during his visit to Mekele seems to have been written by Weyane.
Anyway we wish them peace and prosperity.

    • Mesfin April 14, 2018

He was in Shire Enda Slassie area for three years as a soldier during the Badme war, not a lot of time but the man is naturally born intelligent. You should be wishing peace and prosperity for Eritrea that is if you are a genuine Eritrean. Who wrote his paper is irrelevant but how he read it and its message is more important. Weyane must be great writers and fighters then, don’t you think so?

      • Kafil April 14, 2018

“You should be wishing peace and prosperity for Eritrea that is if you are a genuine Eritrean. ”

        Mesfin

The fact that I am wishing well to Tigre yans dosn’t mean I am one of them or I not wishing well to my own people.
For me Weyane and Higdef are partners in crime. The belong to the same school.
Eritreans and Tigreyans are suffering under these dictatorial regimes who create enemies to remain in power. That said there is no comparison between Weyane and Higdef when it comes to taking care of their people. Higdef is the enemy of Eritrean people.

Brother Mesfin, please ignore the desperate, liar and damaged Arab slave dog Kafil aka amanuel, Sol, Nahon, Almaz, Duri Mohammed, Hamid Ibrahim, Khalid, Mohammed, Kalighe, Samsom Beraki, Aba thimmer, Noor, Setit, keshi mars, Keshi Marcello, comedian Iraqi Ali, Wedi Halima mushmush Yemeni nomad saHab gimel, kondaf evil Saho’s stinking whore snake/rat, Abdurobo teraAraA, in short, ROOTLESS CANCEROUS Muslim nefaHito.
It seems that he is freaking clueless about the genesis of the Eritrean/Ethiopian people. He bloody needs to dig deep and go beyond superficial surface analysis and imaginary evil Arab slave dog’s wishes. He needs to unlearn all those savage Islamic stories forced-fed to him for decades by his savage evil barbarian muslim Arab slave masters and also his other criminal barbaric ELF mendef shefatu/bandits mercenaries.

        • amanuel April 15, 2018

A good response free of emotion. What makes a response a good one is if the responder avoids or controls their emotion. Mesfin and you have the same convictions i understand but his lack of controlling his emotion led him to getting a mistaken perception of you or your thoughts. But i agree that both weyane and hgdf are enemies of eritrean people at least. Shabia or hgdf is no question a criminal group.

The minority tigray are deported to mekele from ethiopia by true ethiopians and still did not get it. You have no place in ethiopia unless you behave and return stolen amhara lands to amhara and eritrean land to eritreans. Just a reminder to agaminos commenting in assenna.

Nobody benefits from hatred and regional conflicts except some warmongers
with hidden agenda . Neither Eritrean nor Tigrayan people got paid the price
    for their sacrifices .
Prime minister Ahmed Abiy intention to build a bridge for understanding and
reconciliation needs popular support in both sides if we believe in genuine
    resolution .
TO BRING PEACE REQUIRES FORGIVENESS AND COMPROMISES .
In tigrigna saying ” FIKRI INKAN HABAN YIHATET ” .
May GOD help his noble mission .

One of the greatest human desires is for peace: peace between nations, peace between neighbors and peace within our people and own minds
There was once a king who offered a prize to the artist who could paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all of the pictures. After much deliberation he was down to the last two. He had to choose between them.
One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for the peaceful mountains that towered around it. Overhead, fluffy white clouds floated in a blue sky. Everyone who saw this picture said that it was the perfect picture of peace.
The second picture had mountains too. These mountains were rugged and bare. Above was an angry gray sky from which rain fell. Lightening flashed. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not appear to be a peaceful place at all. But, when the king looked closely, he saw that behind the waterfall was a tiny bush growing in the rock. Inside the bush, a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest. She was the perfect picture of peace.
The king chose the second picture. “Because,” he explained, “peace is not only in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace is in the midst of things as they are, when there is calm in your people and own mind. That is the real meaning of peace.

Compatriot, I know Eritrea has some politico-economy problems. There is in no war no peace a war kind of situation between because of having no respect for rule of law. We know the world has never been totally in peace Eritrea is not different. But if we believe peace may refer specifically to an agreement concluded to end a war, or to a lack of external warfare, or to a period when a country’s armies are not fighting enemies.. And we are seeking an end to war and hatred. We are seeking it because it is human nature to strive for the best and improve. The only way we are going to get that kind of peace is by understanding each other and taking a stand against those who do not want Peace.

      Summing up….

We know some countries don’t want genuine peace; however, many think they want it. Some want it, Thus, wanting or saying “peace” is not the same as understanding peace. To walk the peace talk is no easy matter, partly because this walk is tiring for our heads as well. It actually entails clear thinking. Countries or people want peace, but peace of their terms. These are just the tactics that fool us. This is the biggest problem.

For example, peace to Woyane is totally different from Eritrea.. People have various different ideas on what peace is and how it would be administrated. This was the reason that we had problems with achieving peace until the two countries reached on final and binding peace agreement; an overwhelming and unified legal response which does not take sides in any conflict. But the Woyane will not want peace; they feel they have been wronged in some way. Thus, why there is a war kind of situation between because of having no respect for rule of law. it’s just that simple-

Hence, the give and take process; comprises and forgiveness have been already done. But the one and only thing reason is the Woyane regime did/does not need to accept the boarder settlement, arrangiment, covananr to cut off or discontinue the so call no war no peace situation between brotherly country and people. The Woyane regime did want to respect an Eritrean state political and economic independence, territorial integrity guaranteed by international covenant indisputably . Because a general association of nations must be formed under specific covenants for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small states alike for peacefully co-existence.

      • k.tewolde April 15, 2018

“But the Woyane will not want peace; they feel they have been wronged in some way.”……how about their counterparts? it takes 2 to tango, where are the people in this scenario?? where do they fit? these are 2 entities who imposed themselves on the people illegally, how is it possible to speak on behalf of the people and carve out a peace process without the 2 people on either side of the border involved? It sounds like a car salesman to negotiate the price on your behalf to put it mildly.

        • amanuel April 15, 2018

The first question should be is hgdf legal in eritrea? If it is not elected, if it is not legitimate, if it is led by or constructed of criminals how can we expect peace from hgdf. Forget badme isseue which is only a lame excuse by these bunch of criminal thugs. There is no eritrean who does not believe badme should return to eritrea. If there is it is only iseyas, yemane and kisha and the trio are not geniune eritreans.

          • Gezae April 15, 2018

The legality of the Eritrean government
We all know governments are predatory institutions that sustain themselves with coercive power. Even in a democracy countries like USA were I reside , we grant our consent, and we oblige ourselves to do whatever the government tells us to do or not to do. But, we appreciate that government officials are not deities, nor more enlightened than the electorate. Thus, we embrace a lifetime presumption for liberty. But as residing in free societies, our memes inform us that without limited government, democracy is not workable. Hence, even in democracies there is a danger, the consent can be perverted to be infinitely elastic in support of unlimited government and power
            .
Anyway it is all a matter of perspective or personal aproach. Such as, in China, Vietnam, North Korea, and Cuba, the revolutionary mysticism attached to their leaders have served to confer legitimacy. I believe most of us were serving as cadres of the so called ELF or EPLF politics; ideologicaly when first came to power, our thought were not different. In socialist idiology politics legitimacy replaces the presumption of liberty with the acceptance of tyrannical powers was/is as lawful.

Thus as I said, you see, it is all a matter of perspective. The North Korean people have been taught that their form of government is the best form of government and that anything else will lead to absolute disaster. You can sort of and see the same pattern in the west where its Capitalism=Good. Socialism/Communism=Bad. Now you must consider, it up to you capacity of understandings that you must either be uninformed or young (always time to grow and learn).

Just remember, when something doesn’t make sense, it isn’t because it doesn’t make sense. Its often because you are looking at it from one way which sometimes wrong view. However, to wrap up here if your question was/is plainly, does the Eritrean government has/had legal status to talk or decide about Eritrea? My answer is vivide clear; 5,000,001+YES. It is the only and only one who can represent Eritrea and the Eritrean people at all litigations.

          K. Tewolde
          More to my point,
Before set about the people of Badma area, I would like to inform or brief you a little . I am not naive to the disputed areas. I have enough knowldege how, why, where and when started the conflict. Any way I do not want to elaborate now because I believe what started the conflict is public, and it is therefore much less interesting — and less crucial — than the causes of conflicts, which are not often public. Thus I prefered taking every thing in mind to exactly answer your question:

As I have explained before several times, I was an ELF, Sagm fighter. When we crossed Tigray for safety and continuance reasons I was working as acting head of the political and propaganda Bureau and head of the armed political propaganda units operating around the border from Dankalia lengthen to Gash Barka – Humora. So I would like you to undestand that I am not naive to the conflicted areas and the people. I know very well these border areas and people not less than Gebru Asrat, Aregash Adane, Haleqa Tsegai or his wife Tsudusan Nega of region one, Awalom and Zeray Asgodom of rsgion two; Mulugeta and Woldu of region three. Specially some of the Adiaba subdistrict villages people lived, herded and farmed in the region who [called the villages themselves Badma, WaEla Nehbi, Sheshelit and so on] were my grand father and grand mother brothers, sisters and my x-wife families Eritreans neighborhoods and Eritrean land
          .
However what have struck me most in your view is the isolation or seperation of house to house which is an abiding sense of paradox. To be honest, this doesn’t even have to be a question about borderline people. The United Nations, OAU, the Hague, Ethiopia all had deep full knowledge about the people before the decree and why they went to and accept the arbitrary commition decission. Did you heard what Mr. Sium Mesfun say after the Hague decission we won! we won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If the world of nations would agree, it would be over. So, why do not we say we won on our side? Why are we giving away your land?

Relationships are hard enough, I know that – because a relationship is an unknown entity. Anything can happen with a people who has borderline, it is more likely to become a major event. People with exaggerated emotional response would have an almost endless supply of drama: It’s black. No, it’s white. I understand the dynamics have all sort of misconceptions, misinterpretations, and false information in order to be right. The fundamental elements of his belief system, the things that have made sense of confusions, are not changeable by reasoning alone because they are held in place by delusion.

        • Gezae April 16, 2018

Inaddition: There is in correct facts raise always that the people residing in the desputed areas of Badma were not paticipated referendum. we know the government of Eritrea called referendum people to decide important issues. Here in, understandably, the call invited to all the people to get involved, to take ownership of their reborn country’s future. What a pity me as for the Badma areas citizen participation in the referendum devolution or debasement may be very worried and politically untenable.
          .
Anyway, to exactly answer your question: I sinserly believe that even knowing all the ins and outs and ups and downs that come within being is/was not new and impassable. The border demarcation must done soon. Send or push the Tigrayian peoples back to Tigeray from where they came and leave the ones desire to stay in Badma if they recognized and accepted the fact that Badma and the surroundigs are rightfully Eritrea’s. And bring the people of Eritrea to their fathers and grandfathers land. Case closed. But since the hatred for Eritrea and Eritrean if more than the Ethio-Eritrean Conflict, that will different because it will depend enormously on the Woyane regime in question.
So I can’t say exactly more than this,

However I want throw out you a lesson on this spot. Have you ever heard the song “I Saw Red” by Sublime? I’m not a big fan of Sublime but that song accurately describes what it’s like for a borderline male and female to be in a relationship with each other. This is the most honest answer I can give, it’s an intense love hate relationship. One minute they are a match made in heaven the next they will experience splitting and distrust and hate each other. If they are both willing to admit that they have this problem though the silver lining could be that they help each other through it with a lot of maturity and humility, both have to admit they don’t have the ability to self soothe they are both insecure and lack filters to their emotions, they both fear each other leaving so one might initiate a break up before the other can but about a week later you’ll see them back together like nothing happened. They both probably do truly love the other, but unless they both want to seek treatment and put down boundaries with each other they won’t last and the end result will be painful. The pro to this relationship though is that they can both help each other notice when they are splitting and help each other begin to learn how to self soothe if they are both willing to change they can help each other change for the positive, so this relationship can swing either way really bad or really good.

Conclusion- Based on the level of disagreement each other,we are highly unreliable at identifying correct position. This is extremely unfortunate, since it means that we have little chance of solving the problems and a good chance of creating or exacerbating. Any how the beliefs that we want to hold are often determined by the Algeries, UN, AOU, and Hague resolution and the desire to remain coherent is with the our for fathers and grandfathers beliefs. Only crazy or highly indoctrinated by the enemy Woyane regime would hand over or compromise the land of our ancestors built. I don’t think you are crazy, nor do I think you can be so easily brainwashed. But why?.
Good luck! Believe in yourself, and be who you are.

          • k.tewolde April 16, 2018

Wow! It is the only and only one who can represent Eritrea and the Eritrean people at all litigations”….Does this view represent the Eritrean people? how and where did you collect this statistical data? My friend if I were you I would pack up and buy a one way ticket to adi halo and cozy up with the one and enjoy the perks that comes with it at home.

I understand why you did not succed gezae. I do not know which planet you live. Certainly you did not watch the eritreans protest in the hague last year or acria protest in asmara. But how did you avoid hearing eritreans everywhere in the world saying they do not recognize iseyass regime? Is that not enough to draw a conclusion that 80%+ eritreans do not recognise the regime? That is simple, it means 8 out of 10 eritreans that you know.

Since I joined this forum , it seems most of ex-tegadelti

But with maturity and opportunity for education helped us
to understand the high-down in political process .
We ERITREANS stand in unison that BADME is out from
bargain because Isaias and Weyane deal of 1981 doesn’t
            concern our people .
Thank you . We need cadres to teach and inspire these lost
generation . And I am confident you and k.tewelde will start
            to understand each other .

” ፍቅሪ እንካን ሃባን ይሓትት “in other words, ” to bring peace requires forgiveness and compromise ”
Ahmed, this words are only wishes. forgiveness is okay for me but I have a question for you to the say COMPROMISE.compromise for what? The eritrean people had compromised a lot. few to mention ‘እንቋዕ ከዱልና እምበር” ሒነ ኣይንፈድን”however, history repeated, war after war, hidden agenda on one side, power ambition on the other side. so whom do we trust?

    • AHMED SALEH !!! April 15, 2018

      Brother Danillo
After we witnessed unnecessary bloodsheds , oppression , mayhem and failed governance
in both countries , we must look forward to find other alternatives for peaceful solution .
This new prime minister campaign to calm the hostility in our region and to bring awareness
on openness and flexibility at people’s mind plus to compromise in order to meet at common back ground will send encouraging sign .
I strongly believe that Issaias regime won’t survive long after border issues resolved .
Now the main actors of border conflict ( WEYANE & HGDF ) must adjust their expired policies and show their intention with as much as their reasonable arguments if in deed
they want settle differences behind the scene which they kept it secret .
Do not forget that Eritrea is sovereign nation equally to Ethiopia . Therefore nobody can
force the country to settle for less . But sadly Eritreans are living under worst dictators they
had never seen in our history .

  • rezen April 14, 2018

Ethiopia has come a long, long, long way.
From absolute Amhara Monarchy, Emperor-ship, King of Kings, of the Tribe of Judah to a commoner young Oromo Prime Minister of Ethiopia, addressing the people of Tigray at Mekele in Tigrigna language -derivative of ancient Geez!!!! Wow! Wow! Wow! Indeed, a long way off from the derogatory name “የእዱግ“ given to them by perpetually colonized Eritreans!!! Long Live Ethiopia, and the People of Ethiopia.
As this website is an Eritrean website it is logical to ask:
    How about Eritrea?
    Where are we heading?
When will Eritrea be ready to tune itself to the memory of those admirable, gallant, honest, Eritreans who sacrificed their precious lives for Eritrea during thirty yeas of struggle?
When do we stop being tuned to useless parochial matters of religion, region, and individual self-interest? If in denial, just remember the eighty to ninety (80 -90) opposition parties among whom there are Intellectual Leaders with Doctor of Philosophy Degrees (PhD).
It seems the derogatory term with which we used to call others is boomeranging back to us !!! The Ethiopians (seemingly with their infinite patience) have a saying. It goes like this>>> “መኖር ደጉ; ሁሉን ያሳያል።” And in Europeans Drama the Actor laments sadly something like this: “I CAN”T HELP IT; IT IS IN MY NATURE” and in our own language we accept our nature sadly and helplessly with these two immortal words>>>: “እዝጊ ጸሊኡልና ።” Yes, shockingly, it is a distinct possibility that the Land named Eritrea [by one of the colonizers] may end-up being fractured into pieces. In that case, no barrage of profanity, insults, artificial love for Eritrea is going to stop the melting down. It is NOT impossible. Just look at Somalia with one language, one religion, one sociological trait. If you wish to broaden your horizon, you may also wish to remember the mighty old Soviet Union, which disintegrated into fourteen (14) pieces. THE END.

    • AHMED SALEH !!! April 15, 2018

Rezen says ” it is a distinct possibility that the land named Eritrea by colonizers may end-up
being fractured into pieces ” . Wey gud , no ERITREAN wish that way .
You are very bright person to send your negative messages undetected . Just saying , I do
      not mean for provocation .

    • k.tewolde April 15, 2018

“you may also wish to remember the mighty old Soviet Union, which disintegrated into fourteen (14) pieces.” rezen ,what are you hinting with this analogy,”mighty old Soviet Union”? under the Czar,Stalin,Khrushchev,KGB…? expecting you to come up with reasonable answer.I am counting on you.

      • rezen April 15, 2018

k.tewolde, thank you very much for your sincere and concerned question.
I have always been of the opinion that communication. in all its forms, is very difficult – and, in fact, a source of catastrophic problem, in its extreme, in our World due to misunderstanding. (misinterpretation). To answer your question, please note that I started my usual narration (worry) with the multitude of oppositions (supposedly, 80 to 90) that we have, again supposedly for the same goal — but moving no where! Hence, in a concerned conclusion, I gave the first example of probability of Somalia how a country can risk being divided. My referral to another figurative example (e.g. the disappearance of the old Soviet Union) obviously, for some reason, caused irritation and misunderstanding. Perhaps, adding the date of ‘1991 under Gorbachov’ would have been helpful. I am honestly baffled.
        k. tewolde, please do not give it any other interpretation. Eritrea, needless to say, is an Independent Sovereign State responsible for its own destiny as well as a Member of the United Nations Organization.
I hope the above is “reasonable answer”. In any case, as a commentator, I gained another lesson in this useful exchange. Thank you again. PEACE.

        • k.tewolde April 16, 2018

Dear rezen, I have a lot of respect and admiration for you,I would never misinterpret or misconstrue your word except ask sincerely for clarification if you’re willing, however, one thing is for sure our word is like a sword we live and die by it.In a civil and democratic society a paraphrase can win or cost you an election. I hope we continue our heartfelt conversation without reservation with a sense of freedom and redemption.Lets speak the language of hope ,justice, peace, rule of law and those stifled masses who can’t speak for themselves.

‘All is well that ends well’, so goes the saying. Of course, to borrow your words (that I admire), “we continue our heartfelt conversation without reservation.” I can vouch on that, but with one condition >>> that you CONTINUE, as always, with your insightful, fair and critical commentaries on the subject close to our hearts — thanks to http://www.archive.assenna.com that we are all privileged to have. Without such communication, what we embarked to do on the Internet can only remain to be ‘for the birds’ (as the saying goes). I am putting it mildly. rezen

“Yes, shockingly, it is a distinct possibility that the Land named Eritrea [by one of the colonizers] may end-up being fractured into pieces. In that case, no barrage of profanity, insults, artificial love for Eritrea is going to stop the melting down.”

    Afka kelbi yishenelu …
Eritrea has a proud people who are ready to rebuild it. Your cousins, the “monkey” will not be there forever.

Rezen, thank you for giving us a clue who you are. Definitely you are looking some room here in assenna but dramatically losing trust and please get caution if you want respected commentator.

Beautifully delivered by the young PM,regardless what is in store in EPRDF’s short and long term goal,he is spreading love, hope and good news unlike those dinos in Asmara who repeat the same old ,stale, moldy rhetoric which has people sick to their stomach. It is a political and diplomatic clinic he is putting on,watch and learn if you can “cabinet members” or should I say geriatric huddle led by a demented mind with psychotic features.Lithium or Haldol anyone!? One thing is for sure, there is no way,not even close these bafoons in Asmara can spar tit for tat with this young talent, their days is waning as their testosterone, however they reeked so much havoc on our society,it will take another 3 decades to put it together to where it was in its heydays.

Let me ask you a question. Things have expiry date. Our “liberators” have lost their testosterone many many years ago. Does it mean they have been expired since then. Just asking.
