Ethiopia jails ex-head of military company over corruption

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Ethiopia has detained the former head of a large military-run industrial conglomerate, a day after the country’s attorney general disclosed that several hundred million dollars was embezzled from the firm.

The state broadcaster ETV reported that Maj. Gen. Kinfe Dagnew, former head of the Metal and Engineering Corporation, was arrested near the Sudanese border where he was trying to flee.

The arrest is viewed as a direct hit on Ethiopia’s military establishment, the latest of several major changes implemented by reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, 42, since he came to power in April.

Images of the former official in handcuffs arriving by helicopter in the capital, Addis Ababa, have been aired repeatedly by the state broadcaster. The news of Kinfe’s arrest has captured the attention of many in this East African nation as he was one of the most feared figures in the country until a few months ago.

“He was a dictator who was not willing to solve our problems,” Desalegn Kebede, who did business with him, told the Associated Press. “I’m very happy that he is now under custody. We hope that he will get what he deserves.”

Ethiopia’s Attorney General Berhanu Tsegaye stated on Monday that 27 suspects were arrested from the military-run company on allegations of corruption. He alleged that an estimated $2 billion worth of procurements were made without an open tender.

In addition, a further 36 individuals were apprehended for alleged human rights violation.

The previous government of Ethiopia, a close security ally of the West, was often accused of rights violations by international groups and activists. Abiy’s new government has carried out several reforms including releasing several thousand political prisoners, permitting opposition groups to return from exile, dropping terror charges against prominent opposition leaders and relaxing restrictions against the media.

But still ethnic-based clashes have broken out in some parts of the country and pose the most serious threat to Abiy’s leadership of Ethiopia’s 100 million people.

Was this the main reason DIA was in Gonder, Bahirdar, Addis and Ethiopia? DIA must have a share in Ethiopia banks!

It is natural for us to be knowledgeable about the world. But,let us ‘talk’ about our own looting story of Eritrea.
    i) Issayas Afewerki Abraha Miratch is about to firmly conclude what he set out to do with Eritrea.
ii) Issayas is now the absolute dictatorial ruler of Eritrea – a revenge that he hatched since young hood. . iii) Issayas has come a long way from first-year college drop-out to become self-appointed President of a newly Liberated Eritrea. of five million people.
iv) Under him, Eritrea became a full-fledged Member of the United Nations.
    v) The U.N. Security Council is expected to lift the sanctions against Eritrea on Wednesday, 14 Nov 2018, vi) Thus, it is assumed the leadership of Issayas Afewerki Abraha is fully recognized by the World Body without a shred of consideration that he is absolute human right abuser of His People.
viii) Eritrea, in the name of Issayas Afewerki Abraha, is a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC)
ix) Issayas, has Re-established relationship with neighbouring countries.
    x) Issayas, in the name Eritrea, has established amazing relationship with Ethiopia – supposedly letting bygones be bygones.
xi) The horrendous sacrifice made by Eritreans during a 30-year war may come to nothing. It is the Greatest Tragedy in Human History.

What is next? It does not matter. Eritreans have gone through ‘hell’ to be surprised by Issyas’ MAGIC. Eritreans will observe it as it comes out in full colour. And silence is the mode of survival. Or – if lucky enough to be away from Eritrea — they occupy themselves scribbling [as I am doing now] and conveniently pretend that that they are fighting for Eritrea that had been lost a long time ago.
It is the era of Issayas Afewerki Abraha Miratch. Eritrea is under his BOOTS, without a shadow of a doubt. During the last twenty-seven (27) years, he has glaringly proved that five-million Eritreans cannot dislodge him from his pedestal. In short, the entire nation became a legend of yesterday’s admirable gallantry, and — sad to say — fragmented into ponies for international chess game – exactly in line with its servitude history of some one hundred and thirty years!!! Within that longevity, Eritreans would seem to be accustomed to their place of servitude. ዘይልመድ የለን።

No Eritrean, with natural honesty and truthfulness, would deny the fact that the destiny of Eritrea is squarely dependent upon its self-made destruction of indigenous social problems. We know what it is. But we prefer to blame the world for our own twisted sociological characteristic. Issayas Afewerki Abraha knew the sociological fault line of Eritreans and hammered it effectively. Hence, psychologically Eritrea is a fragmented State into pieces. Blaming, insulting, cursing Issayas for eternity is not going to change the reality of Eritrea. That is not all. Tuning our wishful thinking for help towards Eritrean scholars of the highest order with the highest academic degrees from well known Universities around the Globe will also be a futile attempt. The reason is obvious, without spelling it out – we have seen it in the last twenty-seven years. Self-interest is a powerful weapon against the noble wishful thinking of helping the good trusting people of Eritrea. THE END

      Brother rezen,
It is so sad we are here talking (should I say complaining) about the evil man but we have no proposal of soling our misery.
I have a very smart friend that can’t accomplish that much. I keep telling him his problem is that he has too many inputs and his is incapable of computing the output with his current neurons.
I think this directly apply to our situation.
We need a super computer we have never seen so far to calculate our inputs to come up with a solution.
      ወይ ድማ ሓደስቲ ዛዕጎል!

Reading Simon G’s commentary slowly, digesting every word. I thought I would give an example of our ordinary house hold gadget – The Radio. We tune our old household radio to a specific station with a specific wavelength. Both entities [ i..e. the sender and the receiver] are synchronized and our day starts on good spirit and happiness. Life is good. How is that, Simon G, for ignition starter. (Smile)

Now, imagine, if we try to get our friend (the sender) by tuning to another wave length – crazy as it is — we will drive ourselves to exhaustion and hopelessness. In short, to have COMMUNICATION we must have the SAME WAVE LENGTH. And in global outlook, without good communication there is NO UNDERSTANDING; hence, leading us to assumptions (1), friction, anger …… and eventually fighting to death, but only to regret after the damage has been done and its effect penetrated the Soul. There is a saying at Starbucks outlets: “ We are at our best when we are together”. I can’t help stretching it to our Eritrea >>> ተጸሊልካዶ ኣይትበሉኒ። The extraordinary unity of Eritreans is well known but only in conducting a war. In peace time, the inherent characteristic pop out to the surface, leading us to the spiral of nothingness. Am I stretching it? I don’t think so. Please note the following headlines of factual News Items floating glaringly on the surface.
        a) Ethiopia established extraordinary fraternal breath-taking relationship with Eritrea
        b) Eritrea renewed relationship with neighboring countries

        c) President of Eritrea traveled to Ethiopia three times visiting manufacturing plants and various historical places with extraordinary welcoming gesture of reception by the people of Ethiopia
        d) The UN lifts the nine-year old embargo on Eritrea
        e) Ethiopia formally congratulates Eritrea on the UN lifting of sanction
        f) DO I NEED TO SPELL OUT THE SUBSEQUENT FINALE SCENARIO?
        g) And so — goes the Classical TRAGEDY – the horrendous sacrifice made by the Eritrean people for Independence, Liberty, Freedom and Democracy during a total period of fifty-seven (57) years has goes down the drain
        h) What is next? Eritreans will have to wait for decisions of other entities. Indeed, it is TRAGEDY.

I have no more to say, except to express my deep appreciation for the extraordinary service that we are getting from archive.assenna.com. It is not my first time to say so. THANK YOU, http://www.archive.assenna.com The rest is entirely assenna’s decision. THE END

        Foonote
        (1) Once upon a time, a friend shared with me a joke about the word ASSUME. If you ASSUME, he said, “U” make yourself and “ME” an “ASS”.

      Rezen,

Do not let pessimism blind you from seeing the bright future unfolding for Eritrea and Eritreans with woyane totally disintegrating and isaias afewerk losing his hideouts , and as a consequence of which, the prospect for border demarcation and the unity of Eritreans ,who have been at loggerheads against each other for twentysome years as isaias afewerk supporters vs woyane puppets, are growing rapidly.
Remember, these two,…..Isaias afewerk and woyane…..are like the biblical siamese twins…..knana and mnana. If one dies, the other cannot live.

“No Eritrean, with natural honesty and truthfulness, would deny the fact that the destiny of Eritrea is squarely dependent upon its self-made destruction of indigenous social problems. ”

    rezen

You are making a mountain out of a molehill.
Eritrea’s problems are not conflicts among its social groups.
Eritrea is not like South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and other African countries where tribal conflicts are putting the very existence of the country at risk.
Every attempt to divide Eritreans along ethnic and sectarian lines failed. The British, the Ethiopians during Hailesellasie and Iseyas’ Higdef, all instigated civil war in the country but failed.
Eritreans are surely dived on many vital issues, but their differences have nothing to do with religion or tribal conflicts.
Christians are divided among supporters of the regime and opponents.
Muslims are divided among supporters of the regime and opponents.
Political differences go deep into every tribe and even family.
Eritreans are escaping from a monster regime regardless of their religion, tribe or sect.
The message of hopelessness and despair, that Rezen is trying to pass is: Eritrea is in this situation because of its social composition.
This is malicious and aims to spread hopelessness and instigate conflicts.
The problem in Eritrea is not its diversity, but an enemy trying to capitalize on it and rule the country with iron and fire. Mr. Rezen try something else ….
    We will prevail.
