Eritreans in Durban Mourn for the Loss of their loved once …

Eritreans residing in Durban/South Africa assembled at the Durban St Mary Orthodox church on 06/10/2013 to pay their last tribute and commemorate the loss of more than 300 Eritreans in the Mediterranean sea. The participants lit a candle and held a one minute moment of silence to remember the victims of the dictatorial regime, who gave their lives to the Mediterranean sea because it was difficult for them to get a simple exit visa.

Among the participants were some Eritreans who lost their loved ones in the “Lampedusa Tragedy” and everybody assured them that this is a loss for the whole nation and we all have to be strong to deal with the aftermath of the ordeal.

During the occasion, the participants signed a petition demanding:

1)      A decent burial at home to the deceased

2)      A national day of mourning must be declared in Eritrea

Many believe that let alone the Eritreans who are in the opposition camp, but even those who has been supporting the regime in power are disgusted by the fact the regime failed to even acknowledge the loss of more than 300 of its own citizens in the Mediterranean sea.  Referring the victims as “African illegal immigrants” while more than 90% are from Eritrea is a very disgraceful and embarrassing historic suicide said one of the participants.

The participants asked all Eritrean Diasporas to be steadfast, united and supportive on the need for the burials to be held in Eritrea and to continue this until the demands are met. There for, highlighted all concerned individuals, civic societies and opposition parties to join them in demanding this basic human right through pleading with the international community’s to pressure Asmara.

The petition will be sent to the following parties and more, we encourage all God fearing Eritreans to do the same.

  1. The parliament of South Africa
  2. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees
  3. African Union
  4. All the embassies in Asmara as well as in Pretoria
  5. Governmental and nongovernmental organizations
  6. Civic organizations and
  7. To the offices of the dictatorial regime.

May God Rest their Soul!!!

May their loss be a historic moment to change the situation in Eritrean once for all.
