An Eritrean scholar and a Catholic priest, Aba Teklemichael Tewelde, urges the Eritrean government to take its people’s needs into consideration by bringing about fundamental change which he claims is way overdue and that can no longer be deferred, in an annual religious ceremony in October 12/2018 in the town of Segeneity around 60 k/m south of the Capital Asmara.

Aba Teklemichael Tewelde, in his address commended the Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiyi Ahmed for his exemplary leadership in bringing about positive change by focusing on reconciliation for nation building. He also praised him for employing transparency and being accountable as well as humble and honest while taking his people’s voice and concerns into consideration.

“A leader who cannot bring his people together cannot lead.  A leader, like a parent to his child, needs to accommodate differing opinions and viewpoints. He needs to coordinate as well as create a platform for peaceful dialogue” he explained.

While highlighting shortcomings that were impacting Eritreans negatively, the scholar put emphasis on lack of reliable information, the fact that Eritreans are not at all actively involved in national affairs in a lawful and peaceful manner, or indeed with no say on relevant national issues whatsoever.

He then went on to say:

“What we wish for is, as we have witnessed (in Ethiopia), for real and comprehensive change to take place in regards to peace and national reconciliation that ensures the participation of (Eritreans) in Diaspora as well as in prisons which has rule of law at its center.”

Referring to the Algiers agreement signed between Eritrea and Ethiopia in the year 2000, and which Ethiopia agreed to implement unconditionally when the peace talks begun back in June of 2018, Aba Teklemichael said,

“What we need right now is, for the border which has caused us immense suffering to be demarcated. That is what interests us primarily.”

According to the priest, for the new era of partial peace, hope and change to be fruitful, everything outdated needs to go. A change in outlook is crucial. Fundamental change in governance is imperative. So is change of heart in those who have the power.

Aba Teklemichael finally called upon the Eritrean government, to loosen its grip on the people and on the youth to refrain from fleeing the country.

The scholar is the second prominent Eritrean, to publicly denounce the ruling party in Eritrea from inside the country. Back in September of this year, the former finance minister Mr. Berhane Abrehe was taken away by security agents for having criticized the president Isayas Afwerki. His whereabouts still remains unknown.

Zeykem Orthodox, Catholic are educated. And brave.

    • cyber wufuy November 3, 2018

Selam , Maybe the Orthodox do not oppose based on region (awrajanet) We should always investigate why such catholic priests from one area oppose ?Would they have opposed if they believed the government was from segheneyti or adi keih in akeleguzay ? I highly doubt it. These padres are highly regionalists.

This person has been disseminating this very message for many years, under different names. It is disappointing to some people have the twisted heart to abuse others by falsely accusing them.
The tactic is to divert the reader’s mind but the outcome is damaging us all, including the accuser.

        Cyber,
Have you ever investigated why the Orthodox pops, most of them from Akeleguzay, support the government?
Please try to concentrate on the facts, not who says it.
        Be logical.

Good try, Wufuy, this gimmick has no place in Eritrea for that matter the whole of East Africa. Of course, some sort of change in Eritrea is past due. As for me, I will be happy to see the start of some kind of partial liberalization of commerce. For example, allowing a free private business of high capital equally computing with the government running industries of the likes f mechanical and civil engineering firms exist in Eritrea now (this is similar to the Chain model). Establish a mechanism to control business transaction including effective banking and taxing system. Return National Service back to 18 months without delay. Establish a kind of truth and reconciliation mechanism so the country will be out of any vicious cycle of jailing and freezing.Establish a mechanism to expose those corrupted individuals so the society will be shaming them perhaps the government can create a mechanism to educate them Investigate members of our society (and their associates) who amass unethical wealth by hearting the venerable section of our society and if necessary forfeit/confiscate the wealth accumulated by these corrupted individuals. .. .. and so on

Catholicism belongs in Italy. It was imposed upon our forefathers by colonialists. Orthodox is the true Christianity of Middle East and North-East Africa. And for your information, orthodox priests have been standing up against the Dictator before Catholics and more often than Catholics. To mention few who spoke up or tried to change the system, the famous and only psychiatrist Dr. Futsum Gebrenegus, Gebremedhin Gebregiorgis, Dr. Tekleab Menghisteab, Patriarch Abune Antonios. So think twice before you open your ignorant mouth.Long Live the ancient Tewahdo Orthodox church of the forefathers. Amen!

      • መፍቀሬ ኢየሱስ November 4, 2018

        Hello Proud Tewahdo, compatriot.
We Eritreans are all suffering because of the unGodly, atheist Isaias and his pfdj’stas. I commend you for mentioning the selfless exemplary figures, in particular Abune Antonios! Alas! we Eritreans did not stand up for our leaders. I would add people like Abune Makarios to your list.

A slight note for you to notice though. Catholics are Christians, and they are Eritreans. You seem to think Catholicism belongs in Italy. I think you need to review your opinion. If you think Catholicism started (or did you say imposed!) after Italian colonisation, you are wrong; it started way before.

I sincerely think that division will only help the dictator to destroy us. All Eritreans should stand together and work for our survival.

With regards to Abba Teklemikael’s homily: mainly of spiritual nature. His overall message was timely and impeccable. Whether he is a Catholic or Orthodox or Protestant or a Muslim is immaterial. He is Eritrean, one of us, and he spoke for us all. I am inspired by his speech.

Pastoral letters written by the Catholic bishops since before and after the liberation of Eritrea were intellectually entertaining and spiritually edifying. I have read a few of them.

May God unify us all in one goal: Rule of Law and EQUALITY of all citizens in dignity.

        God bless you

The bravery and boldness of such individuals in an authoritarian political space is insanely exceptional, however we kept loosing them because they are an easy prey, folks even animals such as prairie dogs when faced by a superior predator know how to defend themselves even go on counterattack to bring down the treat. We have been in survival mode for a while now and we are human beings, what is holding us from fortifying our defense and device an all out coordinated counterattack and chop the monster to size or get rid of the treat once and for all? This is not a trick question,it is an Eritrean mysterious plague that has been killing us for years.

  • Danilo November 3, 2018

I am curious, is the courage appeal leads to prison or turning point for reform based on human rights due to respect? This depends what reaction will be taken in few days but I doubt is not in favour.of poor priest. For sure his grave will be in Erairro to follow others. My question is, do we be silent as usual? How many devoted patriots we have to ignore? Pity, please let have turning point to defend our rights and belive.

  • Tesfa November 3, 2018

What a brave priest! The delivery of his message was bold, constructive as well us diplomatic. Well done!

Let’s remember, Eritrea is now a member of the UN human rights and so it will be suicidal for the government to do any harm to this brave priest.

Dearest Almaz , I second your motion but at the same time all that throw stones at isaias does not necessarilly mean they are part of the cure ፠ Should we not walk & chew gum at the same time ፠ How about those that are not sad because the beating that we are getting is wrong instead of being saddened because their awraja is not the one holding the stick that is beating us ፠ I am not the divider because I stated the obvious it is the narrow regionalist that are tommorows AIDS. Please do not throw to jail the victim & the agressor.
    thanks

Aba Teklemichael is a courageous, inspiring, well behaved man. The eritrean people need such inspiring leader at this point in time who can bring together all people who love their country and people. He pointed out clearly what the solution for the current predicament is and told the responsible the wrong path they are travelling without even mentioning their name. He focused on the issues of importance and didn’t spend time on name calling. I wish he can lead the revolution to save our people and country. We badly need such leaders who really are ready to make a positive difference in the eritrean situation at this worrisome juncture.
