ERITREA:  WHY I AM FED UP, BUT I WON’T GIVE UP!

By

Michael H. Kiflezghi

I will be brief because that is how most of you want it. When it comes to disappointments, Eritreans have them in plenty.  But, this is not the time to rub salt into the open wounds of our people.  However, I must confess that, as of late, I have particularly felt the pain – and I have been tempted to give up on Eritrea altogether.   From what I have observed, some foul mouthed and irresponsible  Eritreans might as well say: “Deservedly so!” – without having the slightest clue what I am talking about. I will explain.

I am one of the members of the New Eritrea Movement that recently published in www.archive.assenna.com a long article entitled:  “A Call for President Isaias to Resign”. We thought that we were helping.  The process of researching the substance of the  article, assembling the details and putting them in a readable style was not easy.  It required a lot of time, hard thinking, consultation and writing and rewriting – and all this was done by professionals who have very little time to spare.

However, only very few of those who cared to comment on the article such as Prof. Araya Debessay and two or three others seemed to really  understand the substance of what was being said and kindly seemed to give credit where due.  For the large majority, there is an Eritrean saying that will explain it:  “Kab zekoleskus, idey tenekesku!.”  It is now clear that we more or less wasted our precious time on a fruitless exercise.  There is a verse in the Bible which says:  Don’t “cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn again  and rend you.” (Matthew 7,6)

Anyway, did we think that Isaias Afwerki would resign simply because he received a letter from a group of people (however distinguished) to resign from office for he failed the Eritrean people miserably, betrayed their trust and, more importantly, crushed their psyche and will to fight for their rights?   Certainly not? But again, who can say with absolute certainty provided that the request is made properly.  Were we delusional to forward the suggestion?  We believe that we  understand how the mind of Isaias works, and we have been closely observing him for many years more than almost all our critics   We, therefore, cannot be accused of being naïve, or delusional or even mad.

As we explained near the end of the article, our hope was that even if he refuses to resign, we would still be the winners – because the request would be a formal recognition by one and all that the presidency of Isaias Afwerki has failed and that we desire a new beginning – and quick.  It is one thing to say “Resign and Go!” in a distant demonstration (as has been done in numerous demos over the years) and in disparate ways (as did the late Dr Vacaro, rest his soul).  It is another thing to state it formally in public and in the midst of the world media by highly respected  Eritreans many of whom  recognized by the dictator.   We thought that even if it doesn’t precipitate in something substantive immediately, it would galvanize the opposition, and if lady luck helps, the combination of circumstances might result in something unexpected.  This is only one possibility.  What else can be done under the circumstances – really!

We do not wish to go into details, but there was an element of desperation in forwarding the suggestion in the first place. The best thing is to march into Asmara with a band of armed men and occupy the National Palace.  But, is that really possible? What the readers do not know is that we have been in the opposition for a long time without any aspiration for office for ourselves.  As Diaspora Eritreans, we have been active participants in numerous activities of various kinds to unseat the “President of Eritrea” who was put at an undeserved  pedestal with much adulation as the liberator of Eritrea by the people themselves.

We suspect that group of Isaias admirers might have included some of the present critics who might have been supporting Isaias just a few years ago.  They are now desperate, and want the violent overthrow of the regime.  They demand even an orgy of bloodbath.  We have had enough of death and destruction, and we would not advise it. Even then, these paper tigers probably have no viable clue how to forcibly remove Isaias Afwerki and what their role will be in it. We are saying this especially from our long time observation of Eritrean mindset in post-independence Eritrea.   There has been too much opportunism in our country.  Otherwise, our situation would not have been this bad.  Our troubles  would have been nipped in the bud long ago. Please do not be too cocky unless you plan to be an active participant in the forcible removal of Isaias Afwerki – and you should even be prepared to sacrifice yourselves in the process if need be.

This is not an attempt to blame the Eritrean  people:  as they say, for now if they could, they would, but they can’t!  Eritreans are in retreat from themselves. This led us to the conclusion that the roots of our problems are much deeper and unless we understand them, we won’t find workable solutions for our problems.  The article we presented was meant to be a partial answer to that.  Did we succeed in our mission?  We leave that to you to judge.  But, we are sure of one thing:  the article has many useful ideas that could be made use of.  Unfortunately, the baby seems to have been thrown away with the bathwater, as they say.  How many of you recognized the benefit in understanding the psychological profile of the dictator?  How many of you recognized the need for a cultural revolution in Eritrea which was suggested in the article?  How many of you really read the article properly or even read half of it?  Many of you are looking for easy answers.  We, therefore, ask what are you doing to be a part of the solution?  Or rather, are you just looking after yourselves and using the extra time you have to read articles as entertainment and at times try to discourage those who are trying to do something about it?

Alas, does it give pleasure to dismiss an idea even without understanding it?  Maybe this is a part of the Eritrean culture which we need to change.  This is why many wise educated Eritreans who can do a better job than us tend to refrain from active participation in such matters.

From among those who commented, very few of you seem to have appreciated the value of what was said in the article although, we know, you did not agree with us entirely.  We thank you for your time and understanding.  In fact, it is reassuring to find out that there are such rare Eritreans in our midst.

I would personally say that I am really fed up,   but I won’t give up.  Allow me to use the old motto of our youth:  Aluta Continua!!

Is the above article a joke.? Asking Isiais to resign is just like pilling the skin off your body with your left hand. If by some miracle you were to ask me before you sent the letter to the beast in Asmara, I would have told you not to be an idiot and I’m sure hundreds of thousands would say that, by simply observing what he has sad and done over the last 5 decades. Alas, you may have been too busy reading the bible to noice those facts or you are simply trying to be smart. If the latter you have clearly failed.

You say an army marching to the place to remove Isiais by force is not going to happen. I ask why not? It has happened in many countries to list in this response and that is precisely what our country needs.
    .
I concur in the question you pose why am I fed up of being an Eritrean? Here I agree with you – not only am I fed up of being an Eritrean but I wish I can drain every drop of Eritrean blood from my veins and your article doesn’t help.

Let me tell you where I stand here. Isiais will never ever relinquish power unless and until he is dead by an act of God (your prayers may help here) or otherwise. The latter is in our hands and despite your pessimism the Eritrean people may be eventually forced to do just that.

    Eritrea forever, death to dictatorship.

    Dear Michael,
Apparently you have done quite a good job in analyzing isayas, but do not gratify yourselves much because isayas’ s mental disorder was an open secret. One is tempted to pause and think what about the state of minds of the new movement? What is going in your minds? What do you want to achieve? You already know he is not going to accept your demand( sorry your request) then why go through this cumbersome and irrelevant process? Any why on the eleventh hour? You claim to have been in the opposition for many yrs. But I doubt it. I believe, with few exceptions, most of you have been supporters of the imposter and now switching sided. That in fact is commendable decision. What is dubious is why you want to beg him to resign?
For a group that boasts of psychoanalyzing the imposter, an inward introspection would have saved you from a much eye- twitching obfuscation in your post. But I do not see any relevance in going through them. You seem to congratulate yourselves with the list of notable signatories that isayas would recognize immediately. But you know very well, in the eyes of narcissist isayas they are mere worms. So why bother? Let me give a hint on what you are going into. During the standoff between the G-15 Government officials and the imposter, Mesfin Hagos fell to isayas’ s feet and begged him ( Ab B’ rku wediku leminwo). For that subservience, he saved his ## s, but not his comrades. One wonders how a person of his stature falls down to that level of adulation and humiliation? So gentlemen, my brotherly advice is please save yourselves from further humiliation and refrain from unduly pumping up his ego.

I have nothing to add to the above prudent and factual comments except highlighting this traditional quote from the writer, “Kab zekoleskus, idey tenekesku!.”>>> this is what happens when you try to cram something down somebody’s throat, you get bit. Wedihagher,Woldegabriel,A.E. and many more continue the positive conversation, it slowly is putting a hole in HGDEF’S cultural legacy.

    Michael-

All I could say is keep it going. Don’t despair. Your efforts are pushing the movement one step forward. Eritrea is cannot not be Ethiopia. Eritrea has very few who would spoil it for the rest. Such as those not adding any value to your article here. Stay focus and do one person at a time plan. Of course, Eritrea lost Dr Vacaro. Dr. Vacaro had started with self deprecating work and then moving the mass. Unfortunately, he is not among us to see his wishes and momentum he had started come true. But you and few brave could change the world and do keep the fighting for justice and fairness. Unless a real man, I am not sure if there is any left, in Eritrea to deal with it and take it upon himself. I am a late comer to this game. But I have seen Eritrea few times recently. All that was told to me, regarding Eritrea being destroyed, I found it to be real and true. Even worst, the streets and alleys, hungry dogs and people seemingly sitting around took me to places of war zone similar to some middle eastern states. Not by any thing dropping or being fired by opposing sides but by the lack of regard.

Don’t just focus on one man; few others will and should get justice in time. Some have sold their souls others have no soul and few more wasted soul.

So I hope your passion keeps rolling and picking steam. Right behind you!

    • k.tewolde May 18, 2020

((I am a late comer to this game. But I have seen Eritrea few times recently.))>>>> you sure are late to what you refer as a ‘game’,if you were not there at the tip off it is awkward to comment objectively on the game and it shows in the inconsistency, contradiction and misrepresentation of your post Mike.Example, what does Dr, Vaccaro’s ‘self deprecating’ (your words) approach and message has to do with>>>(((It is another thing to state it formally in public and in the midst of the world media by highly respected Eritreans many of whom recognized by the dictator.))) .self promoting statement that berates and minuscules the diaspora mass demonstrations regardless of its impact. It is prudent to gather the facts before you start tapping on the keyboard. just for the fun of it.Technocrats are important component of a movement however the masses seal the deal, don’t underestimate the upheaval of a pissed off downtrodden masses.

      • Michael H. Kiflezghi May 18, 2020

Ok, kibur K.tewolde, you have been making such unhelpful criticisms for years now as I have noticed. You may find it entertaining, and you might even get a sense of self gratification to just sit back perhaps after work or when your day is done and criticize people who think that they have something to contribute. You prefer to say that the bottle is half empty than half full. This and attacking people without sufficient reason (in line with the Eritrean mindset) has mainly been your area of specialty for years.
It will probably help you and every other Eritrean if you start to say that the bottle is half or a quarter full and try to add your own bit to make it complete.
I now have a question for you. I can see that your ability to write is good (language wise). But, I don’t remember any article written by you in Tigrigna or English, etc.. If you think that you have better ideas than others, why don’t you devote some time from your life to tell us what needs to be done in detail.
Sik ilka miwurizay, aytekmenan iyyu. Izia kodilatka ala imo bezi inteamahayeshkaya wey izi intemelaikala mihashe neiru intebelna do aymhashen, kibur hawey!!!!!…

((This and attacking people without sufficient reason (in line with the Eritrean mindset) has mainly been your area of specialty for years.))>>> if this crystallizes the Eritrean mind set we are in trouble. You seem to have been reading my posts for (((years))) if you found it entertaining, thanks for being a devoted fan. Zikeberka Hawey, now that I heard your well thought out wise advice,I will start jumping in the bandwagon and cheer away what comes along.By now every Eritrean knows what need to be done to extract ourselves from this national catastrophe, even the underage who are spooked by the boogeyman out their home. Yep, that has been the area of my specialty–speaking my mind and telling it as it is, and that is looking at the glass half full.

Dear K.tewolde, I sense a slight change of tone in what you say and how you say it. Thank you for that. I am not saying that you should not criticize – only that when you say that the bottle is half empty, you should not forget that the bottle is half full as well. It is better to make use of the water available and not throw the bottle away with the water in it simply because it is half empty. Sorry for the simplistic metaphor, but it helps. Many Eritreans would do that- which I think is very silly.
About Wedi Hager, you seem to talk nonsense really. I will explain why. I have never been the fan of Isaias Afwerki even when he was in the field, and I have never been a member or the supporter of EPLF. I credit you with a very fertile imagination of the wrong kind though…

    • k.tewolde May 19, 2020

Dearest Michael,my tone is the same and consistent, just answering honestly to your post with all due respect, however this generalizing statements such as, ((Many Eritreans would do that- which I think is very silly.)) is not good, forget half full or half empty bottle ,some Eritreans were and are fighting relentlessly with no bottle at all, they are out there invisible, clawing working for the greater good without advertising their selfless services, only time will tell and commentators like Wedi Hagher resonate those people’s work eloquently in this medium.Don’t take it personal Michael Hawey. I know one day when the dust settles down we will be working hand in hand putting together this shuttered nation beyond recognition because it is ours not the current people who are melting it like a wedding band and selling it for cheap at a pawn shop.

  • Mike May 20, 2020

    Mr. k.tewolde –

I needed to vent just a lil – (apologies to assenna in advance)

No offense but I could only sense that you are venting some of your inner friction of hate and unresolved pain. Surly, social platforms are becoming, these days, a place to get therapeutic healing but not this one; this platform has a mission.

I frequently see that you have a green light in this space though to simply criticize many for no reason. It seems a character of a little kid (where I frequently have noticed to see it in many of us who refused to grow). Thus I was reminded of the following line and it is a biblical verse as well”……Select out the tares first and bind them into bundles to burn, but gather the wheat to my granary.”’ Not sure where to place you in this expression….. Burning you here ain’t much productive and not worth losing the energy and placing you in a granary would be a wasted “memory space”. Better to be left alone to have you do self destruct slowly.

Do something and make your day a little better than the one from yesterday.
    Regards,
    Mike

[“ዘሕምቆ ኣለኒ ፥ በትረይ ሃቡኒ”።] fires back W.H., that would have been enough to end this ‘venting’ contest.>>> however,I feel guilty to to wrap it up without agreeing with the {late comer to the game} on this quote>>((venting some of your inner friction of hate and unresolved pain.))… yep! pain for those who spoke up early and saw the budding monster and were eaten alive before you were born, pain for all those diamonds in the rough who I left behind in shallow graves who gave you the identity you bargaining with the one who want to erase it,oh yes! the unresolved pain for those who disappeared in the dessert sands and high seas and wasting away in the dungeons of tyranny and human traffickers and yes!, hate for those who exposed my people and my homeland to this suffering of apocalyptic proportion. Mike you are venting because I disagree with your capitulationist and opportunistic educated proposal? It is not 1970’s anymore, the Eritrean people are saying collectively, I don’t want to be like Mike! They had enough of you, they are done.
