NAIROBI — Eritrea, often accused of supporting Islamist rebels in Somalia, on Monday criticised foreign interference in the war-torn country, ahead of an upcoming peace conference in Britain.

“External actors, even those most friendly and most sympathetic to Somalia, need to resist the urge… to act on behalf of Somali people, as such an approach has been repeatedly proven to be counter-productive,” Eritrea’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

“The people of Somalia should be allowed the political space and time to hammer out among themselves a political arrangement that serves as the basis of peace, stability and development.”

Several peace bids have failed to restore normalcy in Somalia, which has lacked an effective central government since the 1991 ouster of president Mohamed Siad Barre sparked civil unrest.

Somalia’s current Western-backed transitional government, which was set up eight years ago, has also been unable to asser its authority and its mandate is set to expire in August.

“The way forward for Somalia is thus clear — a Somali-owned and driven political process supported by an honest and effective facilitation process that empowers Somalis and wards off interventions that undermine their efforts,” said the statement.

Eritrea, which has denied accusations of supporting the Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab rebels fighting to topple the Somali government, said military interventions by Somalia’s neighbours were worsening the crisis.

Kenya and Ethiopia recently deployed troops to southern Somalia to crush the Shebab insurgents, while Burundi, Djibouti and Uganda have sent soldiers for the African Union force protecting the Somali administration in Mogadishu.

“The military interventions of Somalia’s immediate neighbours, whatever their motivations, have to be brought to an end as they complicate and worsen the situation,” Asmara said.

Somali and foreign leaders are due to take part Thursday in London in a major conference aimed at tackling the chaos that has allowed the Horn of Africa country to become a haven for Al Qaeda and pirates.

A dog barks from fear. The regime in Asmara issues statements not for the sake of Somalis, but from fear. They think if the African troops succeeded in Somalia they may do it in Eritrea. The regime has sensors that detects where the danger lies. If the Eritrean people failed to do the job like the Somalis then the interference of African troops will not be far. The regime in Eritrea knows this reality, thus it issues statements condemning African troops intervention.

As one body pays attention to the government of Eritrea, they are just seeking attention. If the name of Isayas appears in some headelines, for bad or good cause, he gets some psychological gratification. Poor man, he still does not know that he lost credibility long ago in and outside the country. Let him bark, when he is tired he will stop. “Inka zeybelwos zbhuley yibl!”

What a loser government!!!!!!!!!! Abey aleka Zeybelukas, Abet! To get any slice of hearing and respect, a government should first respect and be fair with its people. Then, why should any government with any common sense should hear for a country lead by the most brutal person in our globe. I wonder sometimes if any normal leaders at the hem in Eritrea. Sad times of our beloved country.

  • truly, Truly i say to you February 22, 2012

The one who doesn´t keep his own house properly, and who has no peace with own selves and neighbors, by no means has right to tell others how and what to do better. Peace, respecting and accepting people with different mind, justice, accountability, transparency, honesty, mercy, reconciliation, love and unity etc…it should begin from ownself and home. What Isayas doing is all vice verse. The matter is just like a monkey which loughing by other monkey for been seeing the uncovered backside, without regarding its own uncovered backside. What an embarrassing personality with out shame!

Truly, Truly…I agree with you and I like your perspective. The metaphor is Isayas wants to teach the world how to swim while he is drowning himself. He wants to teach the world how to bring peace while his own world is full of vindictiveness and hatred. He wants to teach the world what freedom means while the people are in bondage and cannot even express themselves. Issayas has no credibility inside and outside the country. He must go.

“…its mandate is set to expire in August.” (THE STATEMENT). What a funny sentence? Does the Eritrean regime have legitimacy or mandate to rule since the day of liberation?

Well it is ironic when our dilussioned president act like self appointed representative to the
regions problems defender, but other leaders are more focused to plan of their own country
    interest out of his picture.
At this moment South Sudan is pushing through United Nations to it’s initiative ambition to build pipelines to ship it’s oil through Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti excluding Eritrea. It just
shows we are the loosers not the gainers to the east African development .
