September 30, 2013 (SHIRE, ETHIOPIA) – An Eritrean soldier who recently fled to Ethiopia has alleged that many of the dissident soldiers who in January laid siege at the ministry of information building in the capital Asmara have been killed.

Over 100 Eritrean dissident soldiers on January 21, 2013 stormed and took control of the ministry of information in Asmara and called for political reform and a return to the country’s 1997 constitution.

The day-long mutiny ended after Special Forces loyal to President Isaias Afeorki surrounded the building and the mutineers agreed to release hostages and to peacefully return to their base.

The Eritrean army deserter who refused to be named for fear of reprisal against his relatives back in Asmera, said most of the mutineers were arrested days after their failed mutineer.

According to the former Eritrean soldier, Special Forces took many of the dissident soldiers from their base and detained them in a secret detention facility where they were subjected to torture and inhuman treatment.

“To my knowledge 26 of the mutineers were brutally murdered by secret agents”, he told Sudan Tribune.

As to the fate of the others he said “I don’t know what happened to the others but I am sure their fate won’t be different”.

He said he fled to Ethiopia after a military official warned him that his life was in danger after he was accused of disobeying military orders.

President Isaias Afworki who has ruled Eritrea since independence from Ethiopia in 1993 has zero-tolerance for dissent and criticism.

The red sea nation has no legally functioning opposition political party and has since independence been a one-party state.

The army deserted said dissatisfaction within the Eritrean military has increased. January’s mutiny was seen as the latest challenge to the Eritrean president and an indicator of growing discontent in the military.

It is estimated that Eritrea has up to 10,000 political prisoners.

I do not feel sorry for those who got supposedly “killed by the government”. When they did the coup they should have known that they were fighting with fire and it is poorly handled and poorly executed. It is a coup and when they did that they should have known it is either all in or no action. Again, true in Eritrea and True every place. When you deal with brutal gov. if they catch you there is no mercy and the only option they had these brave January 21 soldiers must have been not to give up but execute those who came to tell them to put their arms down and request politely. Give me a break! Sorry but the minute I heard it entered a negotiation I knew it was a coup of too many naive soldiers or wishful thinkers….

    መረከስ ዝኾነ ህዝቢ

    • Tesfay Okbu October 2, 2013

I like the phrase Filmon “መረከስ ዝኾነ ህዝቢ”. It is funny but explanatory. But let me tell you some thing, you can not blame the public you blame those junta who taught the public not to revolt for their right. What Martin Luther said is that “Always right to ask for your right”. But in Eritrean “culture”, specially since the notorious Gedli began,we always look for an excuse not to support for those who revolt for our right. Go back to 1993 when the then fighters of independence mutinied against the leadership. The public said why after referendum. When the G15 openly criticized the mismanagement of the government, the public said “It is not time for democracy b/c Weyanes are at our door steps”. When Wedi Ali revolt in support for the constitution and political prisoners, the public kept silent b/c we run out of excuses. In the end DMHIT occupy all critical posts in Asmara and key positions in the government including national security. Now we don’t have any excuse and energy to challenge the evil government. Who should we blame for our mess is in fact a mess by itself.

        Brother Tesfay,
I couldn’t agree more, well said brother.Yes, DEMHIT and its members are the most feared group in Eritrea. They detain, torture and rape women with the full knowledge of the shifta regime and they go away with it.People in Asmara gossip that DEMHIT commanders even threaten to arrest the rotten generals if they try to stand on their way.Their number is allowed to grow beyond anyone’s imagination and everyday seems like they are taking charge of the cursed nation instead of actively engaging the Ethiopian army that they are originally created for.
When the smart dictator told the world proudly and courageously that there won’t be an election in Eritrea for the next 40 years, who knows,he might had DEMHIT on his mind to do his dirty job incase his rotten military revolt. Its very unlikely but we all know the dictator doesn’t take chances. That’s why I said he is smart.

May God save Eritrea (Kab sebas terifa eya)

  • Cali October 2, 2013

This time the stalinist Hgdef regime of Eritrea may have slipped from the fingers of the key plotters but next time there will be no compromises, someone will blow the snake head in Massawa, Mendefera or asmara.
There is no doubt that the architect behind the coup may have failed to choose better place outside of the city where some of the plotters and the monster did waste their time drinking binges.
Make no mistake, people are so sick of this monster, a close confidant will do an insiders justice one of these days.

    • Fitihawi October 2, 2013

      Dear Cali,
I wish what you are saying is simply true but its something we all know that is not going to happen.Incase, you forget what an Eritrean might look like, reading footscray’s comment on the top will give you a complete picture of what an Eritrean is all about.Let me try to be a little blunt.WE ARE A LAND OF COWARDS(JAJEWTTI),FEARFUL(DUHULAT)and LAIERS (hasewtti).
One thing that you said is absolutely true though, which is about the people being sick with the monster but sadly we don’t have the necessary tool to do the job which is COURAGE (MANTA)The monster dictator knows it and he is making the best of it.

  • hanetay October 2, 2013

you fools!!!!! what do u expect from someone who defects. The UNHCR lend ears to the liars and defectors.

    • Selamawit October 2, 2013

Are you sure Hanetay. I don’t think you have ever lived in Asmara or Eritrea. Every thing is in the streets of Asmara. Who do you think killed them? Monkeys or devil! Those who killed these people most of the time tell their friends. Don’t be fool. They killed them because they were ordered to do so not they wanted to do so. The first principle you learn in military is that, do what your boss asked you to do. period. Otherwise you will be executed instead. Do you think these soldiers will keep you a secret? How did we know the 1973 fighters were killed? How do we know 150+ Muslims were killed in 1995? How do we know most of the G15 members and journalists died in prison? Are you still waiting them to come back from heaven? Keep waiting bro.

  • Tium October 2, 2013

They didn’t learn from there mistake over and over again since 1973 till now ohhhh
