IsuStrictly speaking, come the month of September, the people of Eritrea have mixed feelings for very good reasons. 18th of September is the day in the infamous year 2001(September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on New York City) when Democracy was officially killed and buried then and there and the reign of overt tyranny officially befell the people and country of Eritrea. The undisputed culprit: No other than the one and only, the self-styled-president-for-life Isias Afewarki.

It feels like it happened just yesterday. It was 7 a.m. on an average day in September in Asmara, Eritrea. My brain was still reshuffling the information I had gathered about the terrorist attacks on the World Trade  Center a week earlier. I was writing an article on it for the next issue of Setit, the twice-weekly newspaper of which I was editor-in-chief.

The second report, covering the situation of human rights in Eritrea during 2006, was issued in April 2007.

At this moment in time the idea of partnership between Ethiopians and Eritreans is being debated in the open. It shows that the age of reason is dawn and emotions are being overcome. Recently there was an Ethiopian and Eritrean friendship seminar in San Jose with Professor Tesfazion Medhanie an independent minded scholar and an author of many books and Professor Daniel Kinde. Such debates will have a positive impact on politicians and policy makers of both countries as well as an influence on the peoples of the Horn of Africa.

The 3 day event (18-20 June 2009) in Washington is taking place against the background of the state Eritrea is in.   Now in its 18th year of independent statehood, Eritrea finds itself in a moment of neither war nor peace, the PFDJ making a scapegoat of a “Weyane” Ethiopian government threat of invading Eritrea in order to maintain repression and control of the youth.

The ELF and the EPLF “the Ghedli” are undeniable part of the history of the birth of the Eritrea Nation. The Ghedli is an institution, an instrument without which armed struggle can not be waged. The people of Eritrea own the ghedli and have sustained the hardships, the sufferings, the martyrdom, the victories, the disappointments and the present betrayals. However, the Eritrean struggle was a popular struggle.

Our ancestors did not know anything about the system of democracy, but they collectively described their ideal system as one that lets the people live their own lives – in Tigrigna: “Hires Harestai, niged negadai” – a government that lets the peasant farmer to freely plow his field and harvest his crop, and the merchant to freely roam the land and run his business.

As we approach the 19th anniversary of our independence, it is time once again to examine where we stand two decades into our independence. …The question is, “are you better off today than a year ago, or even twenty years ago?”   The simple and unequivocal answer is, “No way, Jose!”

This is in reaction to Yosief Gebrehiwet article of “Romanticizing the armed struggle, “Ghedli” which gave rise to a lot of discussion and has become a focus of debate away from the challenges facing Eritrea today. Debates about “Romanticizing Ghedli” on Radio “Meselei” in Tigrinya is taking more airtime at the expense of today’s burning issues such as the violation of human rights and the controversy of aid for Eritrea. Such a concerted action to call for appeal to EU not to give unconditional aid to the Eritrean Government based on the article written by Daniel Rezene on European Weekly is one of the challenges of present day Eritrea and is fundamentally relevant.

The irony is that, apart from all his heinous crimes, his allowing for the constitution to be drafted may well become one of President Isaias’s noblest gifts to Eritreans. It will be something Eritreans can begin their lives upon, in the new day, and new beginning. But most of all, right now, the calling for its implementation can serve as a unifying cause, a galvanizing force, and as a means to bury the President in the hole he dug in himself.

For quite long time, I have been possessed by what will unfold in Eritrea’s political sphere sometime in the future. I have been analysing and contemplating what the future holds for the country. What is left is to put my contemplation in writing and throw it to the public. I hope that such exercise will bring to me a great respite from the worries I have been having as a concerned citizen. In a series of articles under the title of ‘The Second Republic’, I will thus attempt to raise different scenarios of how the immediate future will unfold and leave to the public to ponder on the scenarios and eventually prepare for the future. This is not an effort of tipping others to make the right positioning to grab power in the second republic but to alert the public to the worst that could come.
