Afwerki and Books – By Fetsum Abraham

Literacy or education at minimum gives one the ability to read and write and there is no doubt that President Afwerki is a literate or an educated man since he passes this test with flying colors. He at least has finished high school education and even attended college in Ethiopia at probably a freshman or a sophomore level of the academic stratum.

My problem is with another issue related to the president: that I have heard quiet a few times that he has always been a good reader and the question is if this suggestion is true. Well, there is only one way of finding the answer: comparing his behavior to what scholars say about the qualities of a reader.
What does reading do to a person? “Reading enlightens your mind, broadens your horizon, expands your knowledge and opens up new avenues for you.” says someone in the INTERNET.
Another input states the following about the subject matter:
“Reading develops The Mind and helps to develop one’s listening ability which is very important to succeed in every aspect of life.” Afwerki scores very low in this litmus test because he would not have been in this entrapment had he been a listener. He would not have dictated at the bottom list of the universe and isolated himself and the nation as a result had he been a listener. Therefore, his attitude in this regard suggests that he does not read books.

“Reading develops One’s Creative Side: It is one of the best ways to give a creative orientation to one’s mind. It involves creative imaginations thereby promoting ingenious thinking.” Afwerki fails this test drastically because he has never been creative. He has no vision or any positive imagination that excites his people. He is in fact monotonous and boring because of lack of creativity. Therefore, his attitude in this regard suggests that he does not read books.

“Reading Expands Knowledge-Base: Irrespective of how much knowledge your mind can store, the scope to feed it with new things, always remain wide. A well-read person is a reservoir of knowledge as reading helps one to know about new things and analyze them in his/her own inventive way. The more you read, the more enlightened you are, and there is no denying the fact that ‘Knowledge is Power’. Gaining knowledge empowers you mind and broadens its range.” Afwerki terribly slides in this area because he does not know a lot. In fact, he does not understand the fundamental concept of ruling a society to the level of an ignorant. He would never have thought of ruling the country without law had he had the basic knowledge of social order. He would not have jailed people in mass without due trial had he been enlightened because such a person advocates human rights, compassion and tolerance which the president lacks to the point of a savage. He would not have cornered himself and the nation in this isolation had he had a broadened mind enhanced by reading. He would not have been a bully had he had a more civilized know-how to manage his emotions. He believes in violence because he has no knowledge. He is powerless upstairs the reason he can not deal with reason but rather with the power of the fist:  He does not even know what is going on and what he is doing at this point in his downfall because he has no knowledge assisted power. Simply speaking, he does not read to the point of IDIOCY.

“Reading Activates The Flow Of Ideas: Readers soon transform into a bubbling cauldron of fresh ideas. Active reading ignites your mind and arms it with new and creative ideas, which you can use in just about every aspect of your life. A dynamic flow of ideas also makes you an interesting person to be with as your mind is not static and you will always have something vital to contribute to every discussion.”
Afwerki miserable fails this test to be considered as a reader.  He is fixated, no new idea can generate from his static mind that refuses to conform to civility. He can not adapt to new environments because he is not a reader. He is boring and grudgy; that is all he has to show just because he has no knowledge tuned through the practice of reading.

“Reading Boosts Your Confidence: erudite people are confident since knowledge empowers your mind, a learned person knows that he maintains a slight edge over other people, no matter how talented they are. A well-read person is always oozing with confidence for “he/she knows”. Knowing things makes you feel self-assured and gives you the confidence to voice your opinions and be assertive about them.”: Only arrogance and rigidity characterize Afwerki and these qualities are reflections of a person who has no confidence on himself. Violence and control signify this poor president’s commonsense because he lacks confidence on himself. He is phobic to an educated mind because he does not learn from books to be like them.

In conclusion, reading enhances social skills, thus makes a reader understand society better. It enhances intelligence by exposing it to many schools of thought, thus making a reader tolerant and accommodating to different ideas and creativities.
Reading improves analytical thinking making one substantially objective on matters that concern society. It also helps one prioritize goals. All these positive entities are completely missing in Afwerki’s strange style of intelligence because the man is not naturally bright and does not read to improve his situation.  Afwerki lacks an academic mind to challenge the current problems of the country and does not depend on such minds to help him navigate the nation. Afwerki has no other knowledge besides one that directs him to remain a parasite of society for ever. He is so stupid he can not even learn from experience to change his ways: he has no civilized mind that invites different ideas to solve social problems. He is so low upstairs he thinks he owns the country and the people just like a toddler thinks of his environment. He does this absurdity more than what the least intelligent dictators of the likes of Amin did in history. Destructive and empty people like Afwerki can not lead a family let alone a nation. They can not go away peacefully either. Therefore, the focus of the struggle must shift from its tolerant approach to eliminating him as soon as possible.

you are an interesting person Mr.Fitsum. what you say always makes sense. one can see that you are educated and well-read. i think you are someone who loves knowledge and who lives to learn. people like eseyas however only care about knowledge as long as it helps them go on oppressing people. he was reading books in amberbeb when our brothers and sisters were fighting the enemy. but he was reading because he wanted to get where he is at now. he was not reading because he loved to read or to know. he was forcing himself to read because he was so fixated on becoming the leader. so naturally reading could not make him a better person. if anything it made him bitter because he can not forget how he suffered when he had to read all that garbage back then. he must be so dump. unlike many educated Eritreans knowledge is not wasted on you Mr. Fitsum. thank you for sharing what you know. you are a real inspiration! thank you

i also admire you because you are so unlike some who write to confuse rather than to communicate just to show off how educated they are. you think of us the readers as intelligent humanbeings. so keep coming back with your uplifting ideas and your knowledge!

I don’t agree with the statement of g.ande’s that says “Fitsum, don’t underestimate Afeworki. He is a shrewed person who knows his people. So, the fault is on the people who have embraced him for decades without posing on him any major challenge and not on him.” for the reasons…

    1. Isaias has had many challenges since he came to the helm of power in 1970s. He has never convinced his people as convincing is only expressed in terms of giving votes to him. So the Eritrean public have never ever been given the chance to vote for him. However he has convinced his inner circles all the time.

    2. We all born to do good not bad although bad people are always there. So doing bad has never been praised by majority of people. Generally speaking some one reads to learn good and apply good. Isaias’ bad intentions and his evil deeds does not emanate from reading but from his own natural behaviour (instinct). If we follow the pattern from 1970s, Isaias has never changed his behaviour, he was born deceptive and will die deceptive, this characteristics nothing to do with reading. So Fitsum’s argument is well founded. If he was a reader and was influenced by his reading he would have changed so much from 1970s to date. But Isaias 1970s is the same Isaias 2013.

Haile: Good comment. U hit me in the nerve when u said Isaias’s evility emanates from himself as a person and not from lack of reading. well said but our people are also responssible for our condition as u said.

      Thanks
