Libyan rescuers have recovered the bodies of around 170 people after a boat carrying illegal migrants from sub-Saharan Africa sank at sea last week, a Coast Guard official said on Monday.

“We freed about 100 bodies trapped in the hold of the 16-metre wooden boat which foundered not far from the coast,” Abdellatif Mohammed Ibrahim said. Another 70 bodies were washed up by the tide, including five young children, he said. “It looks like the boat overturned suddenly, leaving the passengers no chance,” he said as Red Cross rescuers pulled bodies from the water. Mr Ibrahim said no leaks were found in the hull of the vessel, shipwrecked off the coast of Guarabouli district, 60 kilometres east of Tripoli.

In the absence of documentation, the rescue workers have been unable to make a list of victims or establish their nationalities. But the few papers recovered showed the victims included migrants from Ethiopia and Eritrea. Libya, mired in unrest and political chaos, has been a launchpad for illegal migrants seeking a better life in Europe, but who turn to people smugglers to cross the Mediterranean.

Africa: Illegal Mediterranean Sea Crossings Spike Refugee Death Toll

    Lisa Schlein August 26, 2014

GENEVA — The U.N. refugee agency reports that more than 300 migrants lost their lives when their boats capsized in the Mediterranean Sea last weekend. The UNHCR says escalating conflicts are driving more and more people to embark on desperate journeys to reach Europe.

The U.N. refugee agency reports the largest incident occurred Friday when a boat reportedly carrying at least 270 people overturned in waters east of Tripoli, the capital of Libya. It says 19 people survived, the Libyan coast guard has recovered 100 bodies, and the rest are feared drowned.

… he two largest countries of origin for these refugees arriving in Italy are Eritrea and Syria.”

Lom said more than 25,000 Eritreans and more than 16,000 Syrians have arrived in Italy in the first seven months of the year. He says other nationalities include Malians, Nigerians, Gambians, and Somalis.

What can be done to stop the flusk of death in the Mediterranean sea? I believe we are responsible for these tragic death of our fellow country citizens on a dailey basis. It is known and expected that majority will be the native Eritreans. Not deqi Arbaa!!!!!
I cry for the martyred people for our independence and liberation for nothing, which has been said before BERNENTE!!!! WHAT A SHAME, LET US UNITE FOR THESE MARTYRED IN THE REVOLUTION for our sake and let us forget what happened yesterday and look forward for the young generation.

  • Wedi-Erey August 27, 2014

This is, unfortunately, the tragedy facing Eritreans today. But who is to blame for this mass-death of Eritreans? Of course, it is the oppressive policies of the Isayas-regime which is leaving the Eritreans of no choice, but to flock to overseas at any cost.
The story told here doesn’t mention how many people were on board on the tiny wooden boat. But from the bodies of the victims, it can be seen that there were at least 170 people on the 16m boat. Imagine, more than 170 people on board a tiny wooden boat trying to cross the Mediteranian sea? This is really a suicidal Journey. It shows the degree of hopelessness that is evident in today’s Eritreans.
But we Eritreans need to really think, if this is the solution to Our problems. We need to work together in unison to remove the evil PFDJ-regime in our country if we’re going to live in dignity. That is the best and only solution to all our problems.
May God/ Allah help Eritreans to remove the evil of Isayas from their country!
May those who perished rest in peace!
My condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

    Abraham Haile ,

Screw the socalled revolutionaries ,living or dead ,they brought this evil nonsense ,as necessary as plastic surgery.
Do not kill the victims twice by praising the bandit tegadelti that are reason for this.
Where the hell are the coward heros ,did their heroism exdpire in 1991.Screw them ,you might as well praise the Nazis for delivering the Jews.
Face reality ,young people ,lo0ng before WEdi Temnewo & many others told you it was useless ,in Ethiopia we Eritreans were bosses until this children of Rabitta Islamiya ,& Banda Fascists who are allergic to respect brought this tragedy. The Gedli was the biggest crime against young people.I know Assena will discontionue my new cyber name after this, but I have to say in what I believe.
    Iam Mehretu Habte.
Death to bandits that are killing my kids.
Life & prosperity to Eritrean Youth…Unfortunately as they continue to believe the bandits were/are their saviours ,it will never happen!!!
    R.I.P my kids.

you wrong, your comments are much personal anger than facts. who likes to be slaved by backward Amhara, no one.it is not because eritrn left Ethiopia or Gedli or Arabita it was lack of democracy – free speech, free election, economic development, lack of visionary leader.
the agony of today is the mistake of 1991-1993. If Eritrea get loan or donation or anything form in the amount of 3billion this would not happen. but you know the elites people from Hamasien led eritrn to this destruction and shame.

      • Tamrat Tamrat August 28, 2014

Can you explain the slavery a little bit?

    • Fithawi August 28, 2014

In a nation of cowards and whiners where telling the truth has NEVER been the culture and norm, coming across someone who simply tells the bitter truth is just amazing to say the least and keep it up because truth will always win.True,I agree with you 150 % that its the stupid and cruel so called gedlli kuslli that brought all these NEVER ENDING miseries and agonies upon our people and it will NEVER stop until the so called “independent nation” is washed away for good.If you think its the slavery service or lack of freedom and injustice that drive people out of the country in a biblical proportion, then I beg you to think again.Although the shifta rule and everything that comes with it is as disgusting as it sounds, but the underling main issue is the chronic poverty.Eritrea can NOT stand on its own.Look at the stupid ports that we grew up bragging about. Its as silly and lazy as it looks. The shifta leader even once admitted that “without the cooperation of Ethiopia,Eritrea is an empty vessel”The shifta and his rule will be relegated to the backwater of history in one way or the other, but the miseries and chronic poverty will continue to haunt us all the way to the gate of hell until this nationhood hallucination on our little minds turned off for good.

May God have mercy on our people (ente kab seb emo ayterekben)

You want Eritrea to be ” washed away for good” !!!

You must be one of those Eritrea haters.
You blame the victims while your cousins (the Monkeys) are busy killing the people. Isn’t that really strange ?

        • Fithawi August 28, 2014

          Wedi Hager (Dirbay)
No,its not strange. You know what is strange though? When my cousins the monkeys are so busy killing people, its just sad that you are sitting back and watch. How sad is that? You don’t do anything about it but instead insulting people whom you disagree with. That is strange, isn’t it?

To the coward hero or former Commandos who was killing innocence Eritrean on their religion basic so all that you called them as a bandit was fighting for their rights not like Sawa graduated young Eritrean who are putting themselves in risks .
Please do not kill us by your mama Ethiopia which committed genocide against our people .In short Amara and Tegarow behind them more than half of Eritrean people are suffering .

Brother, the guy who uses some fancy nicknames such as “the coward hero” or “Cow Face” is an Ethiopianist. No doubt he is a highly gifted blogger, but a malicious enemy of Eritrea. And compared to him, the “Commandis” were less criminal, because they were conditioned to believe that “Deki Halima” were fighting to sell their country to Egypt. And when they came to know the truth, they joined Ghedli and fought with exemplary bravery.

Reading Aya Mihretu’s tigrigna poems I just wonder how he skillfully hides poison in his otherwise elegantly crafted words. This reminds me of the story of a man known as “Lord How How”, a British collaborator who used to talk to his country men from Berlin. When the war ended he was taken by British agents to UK and hanged.

We can not bring them back from Death but we can use Our rage to destroy pfdj. We can not be used to this kind of atrocity. No No! We have to do all what we can do. No to pfjd, in the Church, in the mosque, in School, no Greetings, no weddings, no contribution, no asylum for pfdj People (they forced us to leave Our lands and they sell the torture they have done to us as if ti is done on ethem and they get asylum in the west and live a better life than Our families in east africa or middle east), we have to expose them, isolate them, we have to say no for military slavery, we have to say arming ethiopian opposition (the most idiot People in the world to get armed by isaias just to be murdered the moment mission accomplished).

This little land may not be a hospitable to its own People, but the damage causing to sudan, Djibouti, ethiopia, Somalia is Beyond Word can explain. 100 millions dollars is invested for desturbing the Whole east africa while this Money make a wonderfull living for eritreans. Ethipians Democracy movement almost crippeled by this littel nation called Eritrea. Since Ginbot 7 is getting help from isaias it is difficult to trust any oppositon in Ethiopia. What if they support isaias. The day ethipian govermnet supports isaias the day east africa is witnessing the worrest blood bath. Only that time we say we are Lucky we left Our lands. Are we laucky then, no, no! We do this only when we get panicked.

    No to pfdj!
