First I wanted to tell you that I always admire your artices. They short but very descriptive. Thanks for that.
Having said that, at the very end of your article you presented some queston to readers. To me the question “what shall we do” consists not of ways out but ways in too. The way out is eay in. It is one line. If all want a reall we could push hard whether from inside or outside. The problem is, I think many might say Amen for the change but only at night before they go to bed. We first need to have strong daytime movement. People are still stuck to the old or outdated beliefs that if he gone who will be the president? Any time i hear this question though my answer is: any Eritrean monkey (…for a smile). I have no shame saying that because I don’t follow old rituals.
For now I would stop here till some smart commentators come forward

..the way out is the way in

Meretse,I commend you for breaking the mold, and that’s exactly what every Eritrean should do,especially the tigrigna speaking segment of the population because it happen to be the dominant player in the country’s politics, however it is this segments ignorance that brought the tyrant and his clique to the throne and still guards him as a shrine of the nation, the reason, the tyrant took his time and studied this segment like the palm of his hand and used it and still using it as boomerang to annihilate one another without him smelling the whiff of gunpowder. He fixed the nation the way he wanted it,he even gave it his own chosen colors. Now if a college dropout can accomplish this fit and secure undisputed absolute power, what does it take for the highly educated Eritrean or not so highly educated smart Eritrean to unseat the aging tyrant? the answer is simple, but the same segment keeps beating around the bushes and like Haw Meretse put it wouldn’t let go of the age old rituals and school of thought. I know somewhere out there someone is being chiseled and molded to bring this little nation out of this social decay, and you will be surprised how simply and easily he/she is going to.do it.

        Correction:
I believe that public opinion plays a role on our politics today. It doesn’t matter the opinions may be based on what is heard or seen in the media, or even discussed in the local coffee shops. The public opinions that are formed and get the attention of the politicians have to be recognized and addressed. However, all are not chosen policies on the basis of what citizens would like. When it comes to my personal opinion on here, I try not to get involved directly. I do my opinion is based on growing up in Eritrea and in the Eritrean political arena. However, if I were to stand firm on Eritrean political issues that I am concerned about would be the political irrationality of the so called opposition group/s. I will keep my arguments simple.

To begin with, political irrationality is the greatest problem the so called Eritrean oppositions faced. Because it is the problem that prevents them from solving even their innermost difficalties. So before they address to solve the problem of Eritrea, they must first need to have correct beliefs about Eritrean situation, about what causes it, what reduces it, and what the side effects of alternative policies are. If their beliefs about those things are guided by the social group they want to fit into, the self-image they want to maintain, the desire to avoid admitting to having been wrong, and so on, then it would be pure accident if enough of them were to actually form correct beliefs to solve the problem. An analogy: suppose you go to the doctor, complaining of an illness. The doctor picks a medical procedure to perform on you from a hat. You would be lucky if the procedure didn’t worsen your condition.

Thus, when we/they feel inclined to assert a political claim, we/they should pause to ask ourselves what reasons we have for believing it, and we should try to assess the subjective, speculative, and anecdotal character of those reasons—and perhaps downgrade our confidence in them accordingly. Logically, the problem is that, by listening to an individual arguing for a biased position. I witnessed because the evidence that individual presents to us is not a random selection.I keep hearing war drums that in 45 years when I turn almost 65 that there might not be fresh.

Gezae,I am confused, which part of my post are you correcting ? and you are always critical of the opposition, where do you stand?and that Dr./ patient analogy threw me off, what message are you trying to convey and to who? brother, would you please answer these questions in a clear and concise way and conclude with your current role in ending this grim spectacle in our homeland. And please you don’t have to double post the same message to hammer your point home. Sincerely.

      • Gezae December 3, 2017

Pardon, I wrongly click on your comment’s reply instate of my own for correction. Do not be so nervous.
first of all to you knowledge most Eritrean old fighter of the 60th and 70th like me [ i don’t know you] were college or high school dropouts. And believe or no those brothers and sisters are who brought you independence and leading the country concomitantly. Yes there were/are not 100% ,they real are but much better than the spoiled so called opposition groups leaders and some irrelevant intellectuals. So we have great respect and support for all the sacrifices they paid. Sure we need reform but not we never litter them because we need them a lot.

Ok Mr, admin i will try not double post the same message.

Certainly you need patience and follow ups to gadget the contemporary situation of Eritrea and the region, As you are justice and democratic change seeker/s in order to yield fruits and considerable outcomes need you a long-term of involvement and patience to completely rebuild the unity, courage to support and at times co-manage the political process -providing the opportunity for politicians to rub minds on the ways to improve on the process so as to further build democracy and bring justice as well as progress for the benefit of the people,
        Brother:
My stand as always is for peaceful and comprehensive or all inclusive struggle for democratic reform. because I believe history will not be kind to us if our struggle for the peaceful democracy change fails. Because I believe history would not forgive us if we fail for reconciliation; therefore saving the nation by collaborating in and out of government. because we have to imbibe the ideology that no Eritrean blood is worth shedding; and we must never extremely politicize the fundamentals and core imperatives of defending the country. Doing not so can only embolden the renegades and other enemies of our independence who would seek to employ any perceived political and social division for their nefarious ends.

I know the complexity of this task must be set against the many challenges facing such a process, including the continued recalcitrance of the PIA/PFDJ leadership determined to defy a plebiscite rejecting its continued one part ideology rule, the impediments in implementing the constitution for democratic accountability, and the perplexing task of navigating a path between the demands of the good governance agenda.

In addition to this, a divided opposition in which the different formations used the mediation to deal not only against the PIA/PFDJ regime but also with their own constellations over future position over possible state power without any democratic spirit or life. On the one hand the language of civic and constitutional rights which has greatly expanded the debate, for example, the rule of law, good governance, and human rights, had an ambiguous effect on the politics of democratic reform in Eritrea.

However, i believe, the politics of democratic reform/change is one thing, the practical consequences in the immediate aftermath quite another. Thus, the huge sacrifices which accompanied our rise to statehood makes the sovereignty of this country sacred and sacrosanct, a non-negotiable issue we are duty bound to uphold, should have defend and augment for all times as Eritreans. No one party around or to come, can ever arrogate to itself the right to negotiate our sovereignty. Indeed, no one party or group can ask for permission to diminish our sovereignty through associations, whether national or international, which may threaten it.

        • k.tewolde December 4, 2017

‘….to diminish our sovereignty’. On behalf of who are you talking?Remember those who have fallen are the children of the nation, and in turn made the nation, and their children are leaving the nation in alarming numbers because of a small clique who think they have the only right to the nation,is that the duty you trying to uphold?apparently there is no nation without its citizens.Come clear friend, don’t try to hide behind carefully selected fancy words.

          • Gezae December 4, 2017

While the recent stories have received particular attention, perhaps I know Eritreans have been welcomed as refugees by EU and USA , Canada, and Australia governments since the 1980s, when we were fighting for independence. To day may be most are fleeing of indefinite conscription is supposed to be limited to 18 months, many serve for more the situation is what making differ. However, most of the reasons you aired are not right; I am sorry they are pure false fabricated progandas, biased, I mean including Assenna.
The office of World Vision is half a mile from my home. I have south Sudan friend who work with the organization there. I frequently go there and contact a lot of the new arrival Eritrean refuges. Many of those coming from Ethiopia want to improve their economic opportunities or to live in more open and safe societies. I did not get or heard any one among them fleeing persecution or of other serious harm. People tell boys to get a scholarship in the western country and then find a job. Boys are looking for jobs so they can send money to their families. The children see their future life in a western country and are prepared to risk their health and safety to reach the destination country. Those who have capacity to study, combine study and work. Most are happy to be there and work.
Further, most of the children do not come from the poorest families or as you said from mrtyres families. They are predominantly male have a strong desire for a better future life in western countries. Some of them have legal Eritrean documents from the immigration and have got an agreeable help from some government officials like what Ali Abdu tried for his daughter Sehin. The broker engages a smuggler on behalf of the family. The agreement is made with the broker, and is not put in writing. Children had contact with family or a link person during the journey to arrange payment to a smuggler.
Interestingly, some have their reasons, but, for some psychological drives them from the inside – I believe this is more to do with psychology and motivation rather than just only focusing to unindefinit national service, the political systems, jobs or salaries. So my suggestion is to counteract the effects of fear, anger, and fleeing people specially the young need to feel safe enough to fully express themselves. Thus the government need to create these safe spaces. EU officials and migration experts say that now, Europe’s visceral debate over migration is pushing governments to reconsider that stance.

    Hello All,
Thak you for your positive feedback brother K Tewolde. As u have noticed despite the article is short it is one of those insightful writings. First and foremost we need to encourage these writers to write often to enlighten readers. Asking questions such as —what do u think we should do is also another method giving high value to people. It really is a consideration. When it comes to the raised questions they are a heavy stuff and they may not all answered today
ey may not get but it is worth raising them up.
I hope to be wrong but as of today I see people have two minds, the one that looks forward and the one that willingly flashes back. The later wants to dictate the first—this is the way we have to live, or we can not really go on living at all. I guess this is what some politicians call crossroads or some what “bezia entekedkum merawi ymetekum bezia entekedkum nau gual hgi tmetekum” This is a question that should never beensurfaced during 21st century. But it is in fact, real.
Unless each and everyone of us are set free from any interest rather what is the best for the nation we will have a long way from seeing the next sunrise. In other words,
    admission is the solution.
We got to admit that we had and still have significant problems:whatever their nature is.
If the old opposition organizations couldn’t recognize each other, well willingly or the opposite they should be retired.
